He is most well known as an editor of works by Frédéric Chopin, his teacher.
His goal, as stated in the foreword of the edition, is was to provide more reliable editions and he used several verified sources most of which were written or corrected by Chopin himself.
Mikuli also took detailed notes of Chopin's comments made in lessons and interviewed witnesses of Chopin's performances by musical authorities.

Editor is Chopin's pupil Carl Mikuli foreword dated 1879, 30 years after chopin's death.
There are many other editions of Mazurkas which I personally prefer to this available but I rate this book as a important reference to learn what the composer was intended.
The editor Carl Mikuli was Chopin's piano pupil and many times he witnessed the performance of composer himself which were only to those of close to him.

I bought this edition because they are edited by Chopin's long time pupil, later, his teaching assistant, Carl Mikuli (1819-1897) - Polish pianist, composer, conductor and teacher.
As Mikuli said in the Forward: "This edition would succeed in restoring the authentic text and in making further mutilation(of Chopin's music) forever impossible,......I must note here that the fingering of this edition comes in large part from Chopin himself, where it does not,....
This is now the new Carl Mikuli edition published by G. Schirmer (perhaps the worst edition in the world) reprinted by Dover.

Chopin himself says that if Soliva had not taken the score with him in order to correct it, he (Chopin) did not know what might have become of the Concerto on the evening of the concert.
Carl Mikuli, who, as well as his fellow-pupil Tellefsen, copied many of Chopin’s MSS., says that they were full of slips of the pen, such as wrong notes and signatures, omissions of accidentals, dots, and intervals of chords, and incorrect markings of slurs and 8va’s.

Polish Music Journal 6.1.03 - Moritz Rosenthal
It is especially important that the arm should be kept loose and free and that the fingers, as in all legatissimo passages, should be lifted very little.
This principle is derived from Chopin himself (His pupil, Carl Mikuli, with whom the writer studied as a boy of ten, always referred to Chopin's custom).
The writer himself has good reason to know that this manner of practice and performance goes back as far as Kalkbrenner—that excellent pianist and very indifferent composer who lived at that time in Paris, and who played the piano and so amazed the twenty-year-old Chopin that the latter wished to become his pupil!
