With Milles' works elsewhere in St. Louis, as well as in Kansas City, Des Moines, and on the Champaign-Urbana campus of the University of Illinois, the Garden pieces contribute substantially to this region's representation of Milles' sculptures for urban spaces and civic fountains.
The two figures in the Spink Pavilion (east) gate are from a composition of eight that surround the towering Orpheus in the Orpheus Fountain of 1936 in front of the Stockholm Concert Hall.
Milles never permitted any actors in his large groups to become lost in the crowd, and his emphasis on individual characterization is evident here.

Milles was born Carl Wilhelm Andersson outside Uppsala in 1875.

 Carl Milles, Cranbrook's favorite sculptor
When Swedish scuptor Carl Milles came to Cranbrook in 1931 to live, work and teach, the buildings and grounds were already among the most beautiful in the Detroit area.
The fountain was modeled by Milles and cast in plaster in his Cranbrook studios, and was then sent to Stockholm where it was cast in bronze by the Royal Swedish Bronze Casting Co. Herman Bergman, president and founder of of the casting company, came to oversee the placing of the fountain.
Milles designed a fountain with 19 nude figures for the city of St. Louis in 1938 that was supposed to represent the wedding of the Mississippi and the Missouri.

The bronze statue "Genius," depicting an angel playing a lyre, was stolen in October from the main entrance of the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Goteborg, the local government said in a statement.
Milles, who died in 1955, is one of Sweden's most acclaimed sculptors and his statues can be seen around the world.

He has executed a large number of monuments and fountains in the United States, where he was active in the 1930s and 1940s, and was resident sculptor and head of the Department of Sculpture at Cranbrook Academy in Michigan.
Milles' international reputation was launched when he was awarded the Grand Prix in the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925, which led to his one-man exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London in 1927.

GAMBIER, Ohio (August 4, 2003) The Kenyon campus is now home to an ensemble of sculptures by Carl Milles, the twentieth-century Swedish artist who was internationally known for his large public works, monuments, and fountains.
Milles (1875-1955) worked in Sweden, Paris, and elsewhere in Europe before coming to the United States, where for twenty years he was the resident sculptor at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hill, Michigan.
Both sculptures came to Kenyon from architect Graham Gund, Class of 1963, who loaned the Moore piece to the College and who purchased the Milles work from the artist’s estate specifically for the Kenyon campus.
