Palmer is a veteran of a number of British bands, including The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Atomic Rooster, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and Asia.
Although none of the groups Palmer performed with are yet in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Palmer's 2½ ton stainless steel drum set is, after being purchased and donated by Ringo Starr.

Carl: I think you have to deal with music today and the demographic that we would appeal to, and who would like to come and see us play live, it’s quite possible and if that is the case, I’ve strongly suggested that the band makes a live DVD of the show, with that concept.
Carl: To be honest with you, the real story on that is once we stopped the orchestra we immediately stopped the losses during the 6 weeks, because while we still had to pay them, we didn’t have to pay for hotels, transportation, insurance and catering so it was immediately controlled.
