  Carl Schachter
Carl Schachter was a pupil of the great Austrian music theorist Heinrich Schenker (the main influence on such musicians as Furtwängler, and the discoverer of the 'Urlinie', the real principle behind the harmonic plan in tonal music).
Schachter left the impression of being a highly effective demonstrator of his unmistakebly sharpened ideas, a very open mind for the unusual and a humourous person.
Carl Schachter is the author of some fabulous books investigating in Schenkerian analysis and its further developments, a man of decisive artistic ideals.

Carl Schachter is, by common consent, one of the three or four most important music theorists currently at work in North America.
Schachter is one of the heroes of musical analysis, and his collected writings explain Schenkerian analysis better than any of the existing textbooks in English on the subject.
Schachter's role in the dissemination and broadening of Schenker's teaching can hardly be overestimated....By and large, Schachter's articles, along with the writings of Oswald Jonas and Ernst Oster, represent the most significant scholarly, original contributions to Schenkerian music theory since Schenker's work itself.

Schachter devotes the entire third section to an analysis of conflicits between rhythmic grouping and notated meter in Schumann's Davidsbanduumlndlertandaumlnz op.
Schachter proposes that a single hypermeter, which he calls the hypermeter, and single meter, the meter, govern most classic and romantic works.
Schachter's analyses throughout the essay employ the method of durational reduction introduced in Schachter (1980).

MTO 5.4: Damschroder, Review of Straus
Any analyst of Schachter's stature will do things which make other analysts scratch their heads, though in this case the increased blood supply around the brain might lead one to realize that Schachter is probably right.
Schachter hopes to persuade his readers that certain ways of thinking about a piece are more insightful than other ways.
Schachter knows that that is not the case, and with characteristic eloquence he ponders musical meaning and, through the medium of analysis, offers insights into the means by which a composer imbues a work with a specific sentiment.

To understand the book, a teacher needs to understand something of the ideas and approach of Heinrich Schenker (Schachter was one of Schenker's students).
Unlike many theory books, which are into quick summaries and labels, this book is based on a deep understanding of how western tonal music works (at least from the Schenkerian perspective).

Structural Levels and Harmonic Theory:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
In this paper I shall attempt to reconcile the notion of structural levels with harmonic theory, to reconcile, that is, a hierarchical approach with the theory of chords and their progressions.
While I agree with Schachter that for Schenker, the idea of levels is inseparable from the process of horizontal composing-out, I also believe that there is much to be gained by disengaging one notion from the other.
Indeed, I believe that Schenker may have been much less inclined to privilege voice leading over harmony had it not been for the necessary connection he forged between voice leading and hierarchy.

The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) was a similarly logical choice for pursuing a doctorate since, as part of the same system as Queens, it offered instruction by the same distinguished cast of theorists, only at a more demanding level.
