Carl Schuricht's Beethoven   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Carl Schuricht was born in Danzig in 1880 and at the time of his death in Switzerland in 1967 was considered one of the last exponents of the Austro-German tradition.
Schuricht's complete cycle was made in Paris in 1957 and 1958 and must have be one of the last to appear in mono, albeit very good mono.
Schuricht's strength in Beethoven is his "straightness"; he rarely pulls the tempo around or plays games with dynamics or any of the other things normally associated with his generation of conductors (frequently unjustly, I might add).

Bruckner Symphony 9 Schuricht []: Classical Reviews- August 2001 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Schuricht's willingness to stay in one place for so long and for the rest of his life to eschew the glamour and fame available to conductors of his gifts and ability is reflected in the way he made music.
Schuricht was almost the archetype for the Prussian Kapellmeister: the type of conductor whose aim was to serve the music on the stand in front of him and only that with utter honesty and integrity.
Endearingly you might notice that Schuricht is inclined to speed up a little at climaxes but this was a trait of his generation and of interest in itself and even here the effect is handled with discretion and never interrupts the feeling of flow.

SCHURICHT: Beethoven Symphony No. 9: Music & Arts CD-1166
Schuricht was unique among the German conductors of his generation in establishing a lasting relationship with French orchestras, notably, the Paris Conservatoire and the Orchestre National.
Although Schuricht was an accomplished interpreter of certain French works, he won fame in France via the standard German repertoire, particularly Beethoven Schuricht in a sense bridged the older generation of Romantic interpreters and the modern, objective style of conducting.
Carl Schuricht conducts the Orchestre National with Maria Stader, with soprano Katharina Marti, contralto Waldemar Kmentt, tenor, Heinz Rehfuss, bass and "L´Union chorale de La-Tour-de-Peilz" and "Choeur de Chailly-sur-Clarens".

Classical Net Review - Schuricht/Kleiber - Decca Recordings
Fifty-year-old recordings generally appeal not to thirtysomethings (who must be asking themselves how one recording or another fits into their "lifestyle"), but to those who were collecting LPs back in the 1950s, or to those (like myself) who believe that to listen is to remember, and to respect.
Schuricht was born in Danzig (now Gdansk Poland) in 1880, and he studied conducting and composition in Berlin and Leipzig.
Schuricht conducted a wide range of music, and what he recorded during his career does not represent the breadth of his talent, although it adequately preserves its depth.

Schuricht worked extensively in Europe and made his British debut in 1914; his USA debut was at St Louis in 1927 and his Vienna Philharmonic debut followed in 1934.
Schuricht's career continued after World War 2 when he worked as a guest conductor - appearances which included an American tour (with André Cluytens) with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1956.
As he grew older he focussed more on the 19th century German symphonic repertory and that is very much reflected in the small number of recordings he made for Decca.
