Carl Schurz (March 2, 1829 – May 14, 1906) was a German revolutionist, American statesman and reformer, and Union Army general in the American Civil War.
Schurz is probably the best-known of the Forty-Eighters, the German emigrants who moved to the USA after the revolutions.
Carl Schurz Park, a 14.9 acre (60,000 m²) park in New York City, adjacent to Yorkville, overlooking the waters of Hell Gate.

Schurz supported the Democrat Grover Cleveland in that year and again in 1888 and 1892.

Schurz recalled that the two regiments in front "maintained the hopeless contest for a considerable time with splendid gallantry and did not fall back until ordered to do so." The force of the enemy was so great that all had to retreat.

Gracie Mansion is located in Carl Schurz Park, at East End Avenue and Eighty-eighth Street in Manhattan.
It served various functions as part of that park (at various times it housed public restrooms, an ice-cream stand, and classrooms) until 1924.
From 1924 until 1936 it housed the Museum of the City of New York, and from 1936 until 1942 it was also a museum.

The lowest tier of Riverside Park is a strip level with the Henry Hudson Parkway and the Hudson River.
There are some extremely smooth handball and basketball courts at the south end of the park which newbies might like to skate on when they're not otherwise in use (good luck, though, as it appears that sports leagues keep them busy throughout the day).
From the north, there is parking lot accessible from the Henry Hudson Parkway or, even better, the paved trail which leads to Fort Washington Park.

This park was later named for Carl Schurz (1829-1906), a German immigrant who served as a newspaper editor, Minister to Spain, United States Senator, and member of the cabinet of President Rutherford B. Hayes.
In 1920, after serving as an ice-cream parlor and a venue for various classes, including lessons in carpentry and English language instruction for immigrants, a number of civic groups recognized the worth of the mansion as a historic house and lobbied to have Gracie Mansion restored.
Ten years later, Parks Commissioner Robert Moses (1888-1981) convinced City officials that the house should be designated as the official residence of the Mayor of New York City.
