  Carl Spitteler
Carl Spitteler was born in the town of Liestal, near Basel.
Spitteler did not respond immediately but later referred to the book during a lecture and said that his Prometheus and Epimethus meant nothing, "that he might just as well have sung, 'Spring is come, tra-la-la-la'".
Spitteler described colorfully mythical figures as they fight for power and basically transformed the "waxing and waning of the gods into a myth of the seasons." (Carl Jung) The work was immediately acclaimed as a masterpiece and compared to Milton's achievements.

Spitteler was well acquainted with Nietzsche's ideas, and published in 1888 in the Berner Bund a review of Nietzsche's work.
It has been said, that Spitteler's treatment of the concept of the imago influenced the psychoanalytical understanding of human mind.
At the beginning of World War I, Spitteler urged his fellow Swiss Germans to be less pro-German, and advocated the view that Switzerland should not take sides intellectually with Germany or France.

Carl Spitteler`s novel IMAGO was one of the lauching-pads for the work of both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.
But a novel of course has a dynamic lacking in the theoretical works on the human psyche, and this is embodied in Spitteler`s title.
The book is set in a small Swiss town at the turn of the nineteenth into the twentieth century, and evokes much of the German-Swiss Spitteler`s frustration as a writer in his relations with the cultural establishment of the day.

A private tutor for eight years in Russia and Finland, Spitteler wrote his first great poetic work, the mythical epic Prometheus und Epimetheus (1881), following his return.
During the next few years, when he had to make his living by teaching and journalism, he began to express himself in a wide range of literary forms.
Spitteler's second great work (which won him the Nobel Prize) was the poetic epic Der olympische Fruhling (1900-05; revised 1910; "The Olympic Spring"), in which he found full scope for bold invention and vividly expressive power.

Carl Spitteler, Carl Friedrich Georg Spitteler, Felix Tandem, Karl Friedrich Georg Spitteler
A generation younger than Gottfried Keller and Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, the best-known nineteenth-century writers of German-speaking Switzerland, Carl Spitteler sits uneasily in the literary tradition his two older compatriots did so much to establish.
Carl Friedrich Georg Spitteler(April 24, 1845 – December 29, 1924) was a Swiss poet of visionary imagination and the author of pessimistic yet heroic verse.

Josef Victor Widmann, to be sure, attained a fair measure of success before his day was past fifty when in the May-Beetles’ Comedy and Saint and Beasts he reveals that fullness of poetic power which entitled him to a place among the best.
But the most remarkable case of delayed fame is that of Carl Spitteler, the youngest of this group of four, is still with us today.
On the threshold of Psalmist’s three score years and ten, but still vigorous in body and mind, he is now gathering the rich reward of life-long loyalty to a high ideal.

 Carl Spitteler - Autobiography
The book was completely neglected; because it was not even reviewed I abandoned all hope of making poetry my living and was compelled instead to teach school (Neuveville, Canton Bern, 1881-1885) and work for newspapers (Grenzpost, Basle, 1885-86; Neue Zürcher Zeitung, 1890-92).
But between the publication of the second and third volumes, a musician, the famous Felix Weingartner, suddenly announced Olympischer Frühling (together with Prometheus) to the German public in a special pamphlet called Carl Spitteler, ein künstlerisches Erlebnis (München, 1904).
Carl Spitteler (1845-1924) revised his early Prometheus epic and published it under the title Prometheus der Dulder (1924) [Prometheus the Sufferer].
