Carl Stamitz Biography - famous Carl Stamitz Classical collection and Carl Stamitz Music Reviews.
Carl Philip Stamitz is the best-known representative of the second generation of composers who were active at the court of the Elector Palatine in Mannheim during the middle decades of the Eighteenth Century.
Stamitz's departure from Paris has not been accurately documented although the Pohl claimed that he was in London from 1777 until at least 1779.
Stamitz, in a quantity of orchestral music, symphonies and symphonies concertantes, orchestral works with contrasting groups of solo instruments, also added significantly to the concerto repertoire, not least in fifteen authenticated violin concertos and three viola concertos, the last of particular importance in a limited solo repertoire for the instrument.

Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz (Czech: Jan Václav Stamic) (baptized June 30, 1717 – March 27, 1757) was a composer and violinist.
Stamitz, generally regarded as the founder and most prominent member of the so-called Mannheim School of composers, wrote a number of concertos (mainly for violin or flute), a quantity of chamber music and a mass (1755).
Johann was the father of Carl Stamitz and Anton Stamitz, also composers.

In 1745, Stamitz rose to the rank of concertmaster and conductor of the Mannheim orchestra.
But Stamitz's importance in musical history rests even more with his compositions, in which he proved to be one of the fathers of the symphony, one of the distinguished forerunners of Haydn.
Stamitz is historically the most significant composer of the Rococo style, because of the change from the romantic point of view in his instrumental music.

Contemporaries of Mozart: Carl Stamitz - MozartForum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Born in 1745 at Mannheim, Carl Stamitz was a son of the famous composer Johann Stamitz (1717-1757) of Bohemia.
As early as the 1730s Johann Stamitz had made a name for himself, as a performer on the violin and the viola d'amore, and that may be the reason why in 1741 he was hired as musician for the Mannheim orchestra.
Carl Stamitz studied with his father and other Mannheim musicians and in 1762, 17 years old, he became a member of the Mannheim orchestra and played second violin there until 1770, thus becoming intimately familiar with the Mannheim school of orchestral playing and composing.

Carl Stamitz - Duo in F major, for Viola and ‘Cello   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Carl Stamitz came from a distinguished musical family of Bohemian origin; his father Johann was equally celebrated as a composer in his time and his work at the court of Mannheim was a major influence in the development of the Symphony and the modern orchestra.
Carl’s career was less successful; he was unable to secure a stable court post for himself and made a living principally as a virtuoso of the violin, viola and viola d’amore.
Understandably, the majority of Stamitz’ work is chamber music, the most marketable form in the second half of the 18th Century for a composer without a court orchestra at his disposal and a regular flow of princely commissions for it.

The Stamitz Family Viola d'amore Society of America
To fully appreciate the role of the viola d'amore during the 18th century, we need to be aware of the significance of Johann and Carl Stamitz in relation to the instrument and its music.
As such, Stamitz was also responsible for composing music for the group, and he gradually hired new orchestral musicians, some of whom were composers as well.
In a certain sense, Carl Stamitz was an anachronism.

For instance Carl's father Johann is remembered today primarily as the founding conductor of the legendary Mannheim Court Orchestra, a collective renowned for rigorously training the most promising young musicians of the day.
In the family tradition, Carl studied with his father in Mannheim and performed as a second violinist with the orchestra, though eventually he left because the competition there became too intense.
Since Stamitz the younger's primary importance today in history of music rests in the development of symphonic form in general and the sinfonia concertante in particular, it's not surprising that these chamber pieces sound like minor works by a minor master.

Carl was eleven years older than Wolfgang, so one can hear how the younger composer was influenced by the elder.
The same may be said of the Stamitz, although you may have to boost the overall volume, because it was obviously set down at a slightly lower level than the Czerny.

He wrote 11 concertos for it, but that was only a small part of the music he composed during his lifetime.
He also wrote dozens of concertos for other instruments as well as 50 symphonies, and lots of music that we call “chamber music.” That means music for small groups of instruments, like a string quartet or a trio.
Part of the reason Stamitz liked the clarinet so much is that it’s not all that different in sound or pitch from the instrument he played, the viola.

Joseph Fiala (1748-1816) viola da gamba music
It has undoubtedly been the prime reason behind the general ignorance of a number of highly gifted gamba players and composers who continued to play and write music for their instrument well beyond this point in time.
The subsequent Allegro culminates in a virtuosic dizzy ascent for the gamba through three full octaves (a mixture of scale and arpeggio) over the space of just two bars immediately followed by a four and a half octave descending leap to a low A' that is beyond the range of the standard instrument.
A set of variations comprises the third movement, whilst the finale is a cheerful rondo like that of the Sonata in G. Together with other key works for viola da gamba by Carl Stamitz and Franz Xaver Hammer, a modern revival of these two late-18th century trios by Joseph Fiala is long overdue.

Stamitz's concerti are prime example of music of his time.
The only thing I thought could've been focused on a bit more would be the interpretation and articulation choices in the first movement of the double concerto, at times they didn't match.
