  Walks in the UK Peak District - Hathersage Moor, hill forts and quarries.
There is a path that skirts the bottom on the right of Carl Wark, but ignore this and make the short climb up to the wall on the eastern side of the hill fort.
Carl Wark hill fort occupies the top of a boulder-strewn crag, and is naturally defensible from three sides.
The possibility that Carl Wark may be an early defensive work, perhaps as early as the Neolithic, cannot be ignored.

This path starts off well but becomes fainter later on however you should head for left side of Carl Wark (grid ref. 259815) with Higger Tor lying behind it in the distance.
Carl Wark is reputed to be an iron-age hill-fort.
From your explorations on Carl Wark you will have seen your next footpath north to Higger Tor (grid ref. 257819).

Considerable work has been done on Gardom's Edge in recent years; this seems to suggest that the enclosing wall was a stockade to keep cattle in rather than a fortification.
A fascinating enigma is Carl Wark (see picture below; grid ref: 259814) which was clearly a hill fort at some time, but it has not yet been dated.
It was thought that hill forts like Mam Tor, Higgar Tor (257820) and Carl Wark were the Peak District representatives of the Iron Age hill forts found in much of England.

While eating your picnic, you can look across Burbage brook to a wonderful view of two flat topped hills, Carl Wark and Higger Tor.
Carl Wark, the closer of the two, is the site of what was possibly an iron age fort and parts of the broken stone ramparts can still be seen.

Ironically, since we were celebrating the opening up of wildernesses, the valley we were in was one of the busiest I've seen.
With rock climbers practising on sheer drops to one side and daytrippers enjoying the 'mysterious' charms of Carl Wark on the other, there was quite the carnival atmosphere.

Sheffield, situated at the point where the River Sheaf meets the River Don is mostly a product of the Victorian age but the surrounding area was important in ancient times.
An Ancient British Celtic fortress was located nearby at Wincobank, now a north Sheffield subburb and other Celtic forts existed in the area at Carl Wark on Hathersage Moor near Dore, to the south west of Sheffield, and at Scholes Wood near Rotherham.
Archaeolgical evidence suggests that the fort at Wincobank was destroyed by a fierce fire, perhaps in Roman or Anglo-Saxon times.

Caving as a Club activity, first got on the official meets list in winter 1983 84, though some members had "dabbled" some years before when Geoff Tryon had organised a beginners' and an advanced trip.
The first "official" trip, to Carl's Wark Cavern, was well attended despite heavy snow in Sheffield, causing one car to have an argument with a wall.
Conditions were wet underground and Steve Hartland led us through a short low section where the immersion of one ear was obligatory great fun!
