  Lane, Carla
Carla Lane is accepted as one of the most successful of all British sitcom writers--she has conceived of and written numerous shows which have proved tremendously popular, and contributed to many others.
Lane carries particular significance within British television, as she is one of few British counterparts to the women writers, directors and producers of American prime-time sitcoms.
Lane's phenomenal popular success can be seen to have stemmed from her insight into character construction, and her skill at allowing humour to flourish in situations not conventionally considered to allow for such potential, yet which exist as everyday realities.

Carla Lane's wealth 'gone on animals'
CARLA Lane, who wrote the television hits Bread, Liver Birds and Butterflies, said yesterday that her money had "all gone" on running an animal sanctuary.
Miss Lane, a close friend of Lady McCartney, who lived nearby, said the money drained away as she concentrated on animal welfare at her 28-bedroom Elizabethan manor house in Sussex instead of script writing.
At the start of the decade the Liverpool-born Miss Lane was said to be Britain's highest paid comedy writer, with some estimating that her annual income was in seven figures.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Bread   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Carla Lane seemed to be set inexorably upon a path taking her deeper and deeper into the realms of tragi-comedy when she confounded her critics and spellbound viewers with Bread, a colourful, multi-layered slice of Liverpool life.
Some of the inspiration for the Boswells derived from Carla Lane's own family and her recollections of Liverpool and it is plausible that this character was based on Lane herself.)
More damning was the response from Lane's beloved Liverpool, where local reviewers accused her of enforcing the clichéd stereotype of the Scouse scrounger.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Butterflies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Though neither attracting the huge audiences of Bread nor defining an era like The Liver Birds, Butterflies is arguably the most successful of Carla Lane's sitcoms in terms of its style, oblique yet revolutionary theme and the affection in which it remains held.
But they couldn't have made it work without Carla Lane's finely judged script, which had just enough traditional sitcom elements (the family's reaction to Ria's gruesome attempts at cookery, the adolescent bickering of the boys) to keep the mood light before exploring the darker areas of her frustration, her marital boredom and ageing.
Lane was hugely disappointed with the US version, lamenting the loss of most of the idea's subtlety, and it failed to graduate to a full series.

 Carla Lane - The Mistress
), writer Carla Lane here turned her attention to a fully fledged 'other woman' comedy, depicting a man's mistress.
This series came at a time when Carla Lane was writing increasingly downbeat comedies, intentionally moving away from gags and utilising humour as a pressure valve in situations tinged with angst, disillusionment and melancholy.
As Lane also realised, however, one's viewpoint on dangerous liaisons depends entirely upon one's role in the scenario.
