Carla Thomas (born December 21, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee) is often referred to as the Queen of Memphis Soul.
At the age of 17, she recorded a duet with her father Rufus Thomas, “Because I Love You,” which became a Southern hit and gave the Satellite label (later Stax) its first real success.
In 1961 she rose to national prominence with “Gee Whiz (Look in His Eyes),” which reached the Top Ten in both the RandB and Pop categories, becoming the first Memphis soul record to have an impact nationwide and insuring the success of the Stax label.

In the glorious decade and a half of sound that was Stax in the '60s and early '70s, Carla Thomas was the Queen of Memphis Soul.
Thomas was already a professional entertainer in the mid-'30s, when he was a comedian with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels.
Thomas and his daughter Carla would become the first stars for the Stax label, for whom they recorded a duet in 1959, "'Cause I Love You" (when the company was still known as Satellite).

When 18 year old Carla Thomas recorded the single "Gee Whiz" for Jim Stewart's Satellite Records, she set in motion the development of what many (including myself) consider the greatest soul label of all time, Memphis' legendary Stax Records.
As the daughter of local legend Rufus Thomas, she had been involved in the business since childhood and was a veteran performer by the time she made her solo breakthrough.
The rest of the album is a collection of jazz, pop and R&B standards (including one penned by Rufus himself), but Carla Thomas managed to put an individual stamp on each one by virtue of her remarkable pipes.
