Swans Commentary: George Carlin: Apocalyptic Comedy, by Charles Marowitz - cmarow08
Like Orwell, Carlin exposes the treachery behind the bogus language originally invented by Madison Avenue and subsequently appropriated by Wall Street and now to be found in almost every field of commercial endeavor.
This picture of America is not so much the perceptions of a 'sick comic' as it is a society mired in a kind of congenital criminality.
Carlin is well aware that the lure of his Dog-and-Pony Show is in giving offense and occasionally, one feels he 'gives it' not because he has actually been offended but because that is what his readers expect.

The Decline and Fall of the Catholic Church in America, by David Carlin
David Carlin, a professor of sociology at the College of Rhode Island, has written a new and incisive version of "decline and fall," this time analysing the present condition of the Catholic Church in the United States.
Carlin understands that to see the problems of the Church in the United States, it is necessary to go back to take a look at the condition of the Protestant churches, at the effects of Vatican II, at the rising and practically dominant secularism that pervades the country.
Since this is so, Carlin thinks that in fact Catholicism is on the road towards disappearing in America or to itself become a small, rather insignificant group of no particular significance, a kind of left-over oddity.

SARTRE . ORG : Existential America
As an intellectual tradition cobbled together by academics in the wake of an early 20th-century Kierkegaard revival in the United States and Sartre/Beauvoir star power of the '40s and '50s, it exemplifies the struggle with such issues since the early 19th-century by such world-class thinkers as Nietzsche, Heidegger and Ortega y Gasset.
Cotkin's welcome addition to this picture is to recognize, as too few ever have, America's participation in existentialism and special contribution to it.
On the contrary, Cotkin shows in the bulk of his study, "the French missed certain darker and deeper elements in the history of the American mind and spirit." For Cotkin, the "very notion of America as bereft of anguish is absurd.
