An additional bus station was built at Bayview (the north end of the line) to enhance connections between the O-Train and buses along the Transitway.
OC Transpo cites Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli (who was the chair of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton at the time that this project was approved) and the municipal council, as the pilot project’s main champions.
In its final report to city council, OC Transpo estimated that if the O-Train were removed, the cost to purchase additional buses would take up most of the resources for growth planned in the 2003 budget.

A series of Community Forums were held to obtain public input on the proposed corridor, potential station locations and elements, type of vehicles, route and service concepts, the implementation of the Pilot Project, and the draft Terms of Reference for the EA study.
This rail transit network is intended to support and enhance OC Transpo's bus operations and the Transitway, which will remain the primary rapid transit system.
The specific stations that are to be included in the Light Rail Pilot Project will depend on construction costs and the ridership capture projected for the potential locations.

 C ONFIRMATION OF MINUTES
Something that has become evident in their review of OC Transpo, is that more and more bus trips are to the suburban industrial and employment areas and the rail system will help facilitate some of those non-core trips better than the transitway.
She stated that $16M invested in OC Transpo today is not $16M invested in the light rail pilot project.
If the pilot is successful, he stated that the stations can be upgraded, however, at this time, he felt it was important to minimalize the cost as much as possible as part of the bargaining process.

Sheflin advised OC Transpo had had ridership gains of approximately 10% in June and July, bring the year to-date increase to approximately 4.23%, and this bodes well for reaching the 3% goal set for year end.
The $4.6 million was granted to OC Transpo on the basis that it would achieve a 3% increase in ridership, in order to make it part of the base budget.
This was achieved by issuing the weekly Transpo Express (outlining the changes) to all OC Transpo employees, employee briefings were held and special information was placed in the operator dockets.

How to End Cross-Town Bus Chaos
These routes also suffer from the other planning problem that OC Transpo has: not enough time at the end of the routes.
When you look at the OC Transpo map, you see a whole bunch of black lines.
There should be prominent purple lines of the transitway, and surrounding each station, there should be a knot of black lines looking somewhat like beads on a string.

The local routes 2 and 85 respectively should be covering those, and the 97 transferred to the Queensway (417) and Transitway.
Bayshore is served by today's route 97 and, as I assume, it will be served by 96, before it gets back on Queensway, to follow the express route to Queensway station.

On the north end is Bayview, then south to Carling, under the canal to Carleton University, along to Confederation (with all the government offices) and finally Greenboro at the south.
At Carleton, the track splits and there are two platforms at the station, one for the northbound train to Bayview and one for the southbound train to Greenboro.

Railway Age: Rail is the future - Ottawa in Transit
DLRT trains operate with a one-person crew over a five-mile, single-track line that serves five stations, with links to OC Transpo's Transitway system at a new Bayview station at its northern terminal and at the existing Greenboro station at the southern terminal.
With a backbone Transitway system now made up of 26 stations and nearly 20 miles of exclusive busways--the most extensive such system in North America--transit operator OC Transpo's 900-bus fleet currently transports a daily average of 328,000 trips.
The same route would extend east of the O-Train line 14 miles over CN right-of-way or in a semi-exclusive right-of-way in existing streets to loop north through Gloucester Center and then west through downtown Ottawa on Montreal Road and Rideau Street to a link with the present O-Train route at its Bayview terminal.

Fares for light rail will be fully integrated with the OC Transpo fare structure.
All stations will be well lit and equipped with emergency and pay phones, security cameras, and a PA system on the platform that can be addressed from the control centre, security dispatch or train operators' radios.
Because this is a pilot project, stations are very basic in design with concrete platforms and unheated shelters.

The Capital Railway in Ottawa is OC Transpo's foray into the light rail business.
Given that similar incidents still occur (14 of them since Thamesville) of both passenger and freight trains encountering improperly-lined switches in dark territory, Transport Canada should require additional warning mechanisms to prevent this sort of situation.
Some OCS areas have automatic block signals which are triggered by the presence of a train in a block ahead.
