From 1879-1918, the Carlisle Barracks was home to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, the model for a nationwide system of government-run Indian boarding schools intended to "civilize" American Indian children by teaching them farming and trades while squelching their language and traditions.
The Carlisle Indian Industrial School Band played at the 1892 Worlds Fair in Chicago and at the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge and was a regular fixture at presidential inaugurations.

The current barracks employs 1,800 people, more than half of them civilians, and is a key element of the Carlisle economy.
Besides the Carlisle Barracks and Letterkenny, there are four other sizeable military facilities in central Pennsylvania, including Fort Indiantown Gap military training camp in Lebanon County, 20 miles east of Harrisburg.
