In the mid-1930s it was decided to modernize and refit the C class cruisers for anti-aircraft work.
The aim was to convert all 13 cruisers of the late C-classes, the Caledons, Ceress and Carlisles.
In 1941, Calcutta and Carlisle took part in the Battle of Cape Matapan, in which a number of Italian warships were sunk.

HMS Carlisle was completed with a hanger positioned under the bridge, and she was to carry aircraft, however this proved unsatisfactory and was later removed.
In August Carlisle was serving in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden area when she assisted in the evacuation of British troops, civilians and the sick from Berber in British Somali to Aden before being occupied by Italian troops.
Carlisle received a direct hit which killed her Commanding Officer Capt. T.C. Hampton, R.N. The British destroyer HMS Kingston immediately went alongside to give assistance, but the fire now raging and the still continuing air attacks prompted the cruiser`s Senior Officer to refuse the destroyer`s offer.

The converted cruiser was the lead ship the new Albany guided missile cruiser class.
During the ensuing months, the cruiser made a number of voyages for the purpose of training naval reservists and NROTC midshipmen.
The cruiser alternated five assignments to the 6th Fleet with operations along the east coast of the United States and in the West Indies and made three cruises to South American ports.

She served as a AA cruiser during world war two and was sunk in the Mediterranean north of Bizerta on the 12th August 1942, torpedoed by the Italian submarine Axum.
Served during world war two as a AA cruiser and during the evacuation of Crete she was sunk by air attack on the 1st of June 1941.
Although invariably in the thick of the bombing, the Carlisle appears not to have made too many headlines, probably because she had to stay close to the convoy and defend it against air attack, whilst the more dashing job of seeing off the Italian and German battle cruisers was left to others.

The heavy cruiser PITTSBURGH (CA-70) was renamed CANBERRA on 12 October 1942-to honor the Australian heavy cruiser lost during the disastrous Battle of Savo Island-and ALBANY was renamed PITTSBURGH (q.v.) on 26 November 1942, well in advance of her keel laying which took place on 3 February 1943.
Following outfitting and a shakedown cruise in the vicinity of Casco Bay, Maine, ALBANY began operations along the east coast of the United States punctuated with cruises to the West Indies.
For almost five years, she again alternated deployments to European waters-both to the Mediterranean Sea and to the North Atlantic-with operations along the east coast and in the West Indies.

He attended Carlisle High School and the Dickinson Preparatory School before spending three years as a member of the Dickinson College class of 1862.

Robert Carlisle Giffen was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1886.
Midshipman Giffen graduated with the Academy's class of 1907 and was assigned to the battleship Virginia, in which he voyaged around the world with the "Great White Fleet" between late 1907 and early 1909.
During 1943 and into 1944, Rear Admiral Giffen commanded battleship and cruiser task forces in the Pacific, participating in the latter stages of the fight for Guadalcanal, the Aleutians campaign, the invasions of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, and raids against Japanese bases in the central Pacific.

USS Astoria, a 9950-ton New Orleans class heavy cruiser built at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, was commissioned in April 1934.
She spent the summer of 1934 on a shakedown cruise that took her across the Pacific to Australia, then joined the Scouting Force for operations with the U.S. Fleet.
On the night of 8-9 August, Astoria was one of three heavy cruisers guarding the northern approach to the invasion area, and was the only one afloat after a blistering night action against a Japanese cruiser force.

The triple mounting used on the Tuscaloosa (CA-37) sub-class were similar to those used on their sisters of the New Orleans (CA-32) class, but these much lighter guns gave them a significantly lower revolving weight.
The Baltimore and Oregon City classes also had different shell-handling equipment than did the older cruisers in order to use the new, "super-heavy" 335 lbs.
The older cruisers continued to use the previous 260 lbs.

 Military Experiences
A few weeks before we were scheduled for a Med cruise I was transferred to a guided missile destroyer, the USS Gyatt (DDG 712) which was being retrofitted in the Boston Naval Shipyard to carry missiles.
When renovations were complete, we spent several months in Newport, RI on picket duty, cruising the Atlantic for a week and then in port for a week.
It was a great class and that is why Quig and I took the mantle of the class of '57.

The Carlisle class cruiser HMS Calcutta served on the America and West Indies station from her completion in August 1919 until ordered home in November 1927.
In 1938 she was converted to an Anti Aircraft cruiser.
On June 1, 1941, while taking part in the British and Greek withdrawal from the island of Crete, Calcutta was sunk and 116 of her crew lost after she was struck by two bombs from JU-88 enemy aircraft, when 100 miles north of Alexandria.

Well I replaced my Carlisle bias ply tires on my boat trailer 2 years ago, I bought the boat about 2 monthes earlier a '97 model.
I bought Carlisle radial tires as replacements before I heard/read all of the bad hype.
I also had Carlisles on my previous pop-up and never a problem with them, again maximum pressure every trip.

Initially commissioned as the second OREGON CITY - class heavy cruiser, the USS ALBANY was the fourth ship in the Navy named after the city in New York located on the west bank of the Hudson River about 145 miles north of New York City.
After several weeks of preparations, ALBANY embarked upon her shakedown cruise to the West Indies on 15 September.
Relieved of that duty at Gaeta by PUGET SOUND (AD 38) on 28 May 1980, the guided missile cruiser embarked upon the voyage back to the United States on 2 June.
