Carlito's Way is a step up, but this is not the same DePalma who got the adrenaline moving with The Untouchables.
Carlito's Way has a number of superbly-directed action sequences, and there are moments of absolute brilliance, but these are connected by a plodding narrative that sputters to find an appropriate pace.
The movie is based on two novels (Carlito's Way and After Hours) by New York Justice Edwin Torres, one of the city's harshest judges (in sentencing one criminal, Torres informed him that "your parole officer hasn't been born yet").
