Carlo Goldoni (February 25, 1707 - February 6, 1793) was an Italian playwright.
In some of his plays he retained the masked characters of the commedia dell'arte which dominated the Italian stage at that time, but in many others, including those regarded as his best, he broke from that tradition, and wrote contemporary comedies of manners with realistic characters.
Goldoni collaborated with Baldassare Galuppi on a number of operas.

Carlo Goldoni nacque a Venezia il 25 febbraio 1707 da Margherita Salvioni e da Giulio, medico di professione; una famiglia benestante, in cui la passione per il teatro risaliva al nonno paterno, che era solito organizzare recite nella propria villa di campagna.
Nel 1719 Carlo raggiunse il padre, che nel frattempo si era trasferito a Perugia, e cominciò a seguire corsi di grammatica e retorica presso il locale collegio dei gesuiti.
Goldoni abbandonò la carriera di avvocato e nell’aprile del 1748 seguì la compagnia Medebach a Venezia, facendo prima tappa a Mantova e a Modena.

His importance, which consisted rather in giving good examples than precepts, lay in his having regularized the drama of his country, and freed it from the conventionality of the Commedia dell' Arte, or improvised comedy.
