In 1634, his first individual commission was the reconstruction of the church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (also called San Carlino).

A study of Rainaldi’s chapels, altars, and tombs presents a new perspective on how Rainaldi managed his career as he cultivated important patrons and developed longstanding collaborative relationships with Roman painters and sculptors.
Unlike Rainaldi’s churches and urban projects, which were commissioned by popes, Rainaldi’s smaller commissions were supported by a wide base of patrons that included Roman nobles, cardinals, religious orders, and confraternities.
Through an examination of the institutions in which Rainaldi participated and the individuals who supported his career, my dissertation offers a portrait of Rainaldi, a study of his role as a professional figure, and a cultural history of seventeenth-century Rome.
