Carlos Dengler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carlos "D" Dengler born April 23, 1974, is a musician best known as bassist for New York indie rock band Interpol.
Dengler was studying philosophy and history at the time and wanted to pursue a career as an academic, but was coaxed into joining the band along with lead singer Paul Banks.
Carlos D's trademark style is marked with strident staccato bursts, a clean tone brought about by his Fender Jazz Bass, and octave jumps, almost in a disco-like fashion.

The ace of bass - Music - Entertainment - theage.com.au
Born Carlos Dengler, of German/Colombian extraction, with a bachelor's degree in philosophy from New York University and a decided resemblance to actor Crispin Glover, the 30-year old bassist is certainly a character, though not an immediately likeable one.
He describes the Interpol fans who approach him as wanting to "bask in the glory"; he shortened his surname because it was too "ethnically confusing"; and in his high-profile sideline as a nightclub DJ he refuses to be referred to as "from Interpol", insisting that his own name should be drawcard enough.
Dengler is perhaps more recognisable than his bandmates - vocalist Paul Banks, guitarist Daniel Kessler and drummer Sam Fogarino - because he takes the Interpol visual aesthetic one step further, accessorising with leather boots, braces and an empty gun holster (which he thinks "looks bad-ass") to create a decidedly militaristic effect.

Daniel Alexander Kessler (born September 25, 1974 in London, England) plays guitar and sings backing vocals in the New York City based band Interpol.
It was Kessler's desire to play in a real band which made him approach Carlos Dengler, with whom he attended a history class in New York University.

On top of that, Dengler, 30, and his bandmates - singer Paul Banks, 26, guitarist Daniel Kessler, 29, and drummer Sam Fogarino, 36 - are among an elite group (including the Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) that kicked off a modern-rock renaissance here in New York and went on to become international sensations.
Carlos' approach to the world is like a work of architecture.
Dengler, Kessler and a drummer who has since left the group began working up songs for several months before recruiting Banks, whom Kessler had met at a summer program in Paris a year earlier.

Hassles aside, Dengler seeks a different kind of solace during the band's regular afterparties, which take place about every other show.
To that end, when the tour concludes, the band is eager to pursue "little pet agendas," from Fogarino's interest in opening a recording studio to Banks' pursuit of his solo material.

Kessler recruited three fellow NYU students starting with Greg Drudy (drums), followed shortly thereafter by Carlos Dengler (bass, keyboards), and finally rounded out with Paul Banks (lead vocals, guitar).
