Luego de cumplir la totalidad de su mandato, comenzó a edificar su candidatura para retornar a la presidencia en 1944, pero falleció, repentinamente, en enero de 1943, cuando ya era considerado como el heredero natural de la presidencia de la Nación por muchos sectores antipersonalistas.
Enfermo de diabetes, ciego, se vio obligado a pedir licencia en 1940 sin ya poder volver a retomar sus funciones; debió renunciar a la presidencia el 27 de junio de 1942, poco antes de su muerte.
Fue elegido gobernador de su provincia en marzo de 1973, cargo que ejerció hasta ser derrocado en marzo de 1976, permaneciendo encarcelado durante casi cinco años, hasta febrero de 1981.

Within this framework, the San Pedro de Atacama community has signed an agreement with Conaf and is charging an entrance fee to the Valle de la Luna Park in order to control the number of people who visit and to assure that visitors stay on safe paths and in safe areas.
The community is also interested in erecting “Danger, explosives” signs in Valle de la Luna, and indigenous groups in the area have started to demand that the mines be removed from land to which they have ancestral rights.
