Latin America: Argentina sunny, but regional outlook stormy
Vice-president Carlos Ruckauf was of a similar opinion, stating the situation in Argentina is unlike that of Brazil, above all due to the size and nature of the latter's foreign and national debt - 300 billion dollars of short-term expiry loans.
Ruckauf said Argentina would not need to modify its monetary policy and that the country is preparing to confront this crisis, despite the unavoidable increased cost of credit and cooling of the economy.
Economist and consultant Carlos Melconian stated there was no risk at all of devaluation in Argentina, stressing that at present an increase is being seen in reserves and deposits in the banks - simply speaking, more fuel for the economy's fires.

UJC - Oxford Analytica Brief: Argentina's Economic and Political Situation
Peronist economist Jorge Remes Lenicov was named as economy minister while Carlos Ruckauf, governor of Buenos Aires province, was appointed foreign minister.
ECONOMIC PLAN: Duhalde announced that the suspension of foreign debt repayments earlier imposed by Rodriguez Saa would be maintained, as would a series of austerity measures within the government; ministers and secretaries of state were ‘invited' to waive their salaries for six months.
On the face of it, Ruckauf is not the most plausible choice of foreign minister -- he has a poor image abroad as a result of corruption allegations, his deficit spending during his term as governor, and his espousal of a `hard line' on crime which translated into a virtual carte blanche for police abuses.

The Militant - February 11, 2002 -- Argentine regime pressed to abide by imperialist 'rules'
Juan Perón, who was president in 1946—55 and again in 1973—74, promoted the image of a champion of workers who stood up to imperialism, while tying the unions to his Justicialist Party and to the capitalist state.
One of Duhalde's first actions was to devalue the peso, which since 1991 had been pegged to the U.S. dollar at a one-to-one exchange rate, an increasingly unsustainable policy as Argentina's economy weakened.
Ruckauf was sent to meet with top officials in Washington "to convince the U.S. that the new government will not institute protectionist measures or turn back the clock on the country's free market reforms," the Times reported.
