José António Carlos de Seixas (Coimbra, 11 June 1704 - Lisbon, 25 August 1742) was a Portuguese composer, the son of the cathedral organist, Francisco Vaz and Marcelina Nunes.
When he was fourteen, he succeeded his father as organist in 1718 and two years later moved to Lisbon, where he gave harpsichord lessons and met Domenico Scarlatti, who lived in Portugal, from 1721 to 1728.
Seixas later became organist in the court chapel and Lisbon cathedral as well as court composer.

Carlos Seixas was immensely popular during his lifetime, but has unfortunately, outside his native country, never been accorded the attention given, for example, to his contemporary Domenico Scarlatti.
Seixas and Scarlatti both held the position of music master at the Royal Court of King John V. Seixas was an extremely prolific composer.
Seixas succeeded in combining the Italian and the French with a nostalgic atmosphere that is quintessentially Portugese.

Seixas must have had a considerable reputation as a harpsichordist.
In order to be able to evaluate Seixas’ musical language, on must only cast a glance at the music of his above-mentioned “Italianized” colleagues to recognize without difficulty that, in contrast to them, he cultivated a different, an “Iberian” idiom that seems to come from the Iberian organ tradition of the previous century.

The shockingly short-lived Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga (1806-26) is featured composer on this Naxos disc from the Algarve in Portugal, but the other four are Portuguese, while Heitor Villa-Lobos was the citizen of a nation colonized by Portugal a couple of centuries earlier.
The influence of Beethoven and Schubert can be felt, which is not to say copied, in Arriaga’s major-minor shifts and a pathos that conductor Álvaro Cassuto tends to underplay, although he is plainly a schooled leader.
The piece by Carlos Seixas (1704-42) is genre music in the Italian style, while the Joao de Sousa Carvalho (1745-98) opera overture is imitation-Italian.

Whilst much has been made of the association between Seixas and Dominico Scarlatti during the latter’s stay at the court in Lisbon from 1720-28, (and there was certainly a mutual admiration), it appears very unlikely that Seixas was unduly influenced by the older Italian.
Certainly Seixas was far more disposed to the multi-movement sonata (or toccata, as the pieces are entitled in some MSS), many of them including a minuet with or without its trio, frequently in the tonic minor.
He opened his recital with sonatas by Seixas, which were heard for the first time since their rediscovery.

My only suggestion, might be perhaps a different pairing for the 'Te Deum.' An additional selection from among de Sousa Carvalho's two other 'Te Deum' compositions, their overtures, or perhaps other pieces from his additional sacred works, might add to this already superior CD.
The works by de Seixas, Teiteira, and de Almeida's are of excellent quality as well, but it would be nice to have some of their longer works included on the CD.
Not only is the very fine Portuguese music of this period, little known outside the Iberian Peninsula, but many compositions were destroyed during various 18th century earthquakes and resulting fires, and have been lost forever.
