Carlow (Ceatharlach in Irish, meaning "four-part lake") is an inland town in the south-east of Ireland in County Carlow, 84 km from Dublin.
In 1650, during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, Carlow was besieged and taken by English Parliamentarian forces, hastening the end of the Siege of Waterford and the capitulation of that city.
During the 1798 rebellion Carlow was the scene of a vicious massacre of 600 rebels and civilians following an unsuccessful attack on the town by the United Irishmen.

So revenge was in the air at Carlow regatta when it was believed that Garda and Carlow would fight out the final and once again the rightful order of things would be restored with Garda, who incidentally were very confident of victory, having to take second place to our local heroes.
Now I should have mentioned the Carlow club and made history at Trinity when a schools four won the schools event there and would have brought the schools challenge cup back to the town, but the Belfast crew who had won it in 1955 didn’t bother to send to back in time for the regatta.
Carlow were represented in the fours by their crew which had come from behind at Trinity regatta to beat University College Galway in their heat before being beaten by Garda in the semi-final on the Liffey.

Carlow's disclosure yesterday contradicts a statement the school released Friday in the hours after the grand jury charged Wecht.
A May 2005 memorandum of understanding between Carlow and Wecht states the coroner would be permitted to continue using the school's anatomy lab in A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology to perform private autopsies.
"Carlow will continue to pay for transportation up to one cadaver a week to and from the university for instruction in (the lab) during the fall term of every year," the addendum states.
