Carlsbad Lake is in the widened bed of the Pecos River, and Riverside Park is shown on the left, as viewed in 1990 from the Bataan Memorial Bridge, built in 1941.
The purpose was to emphasize the water flowing from a mineral spring which had already acquired the name "Carlsbad Mineral Spring." In a referendum the change carried by a vote of 83 t a 43.
Although Carlsbad was on the far edge of the oil fields, it already had a head start as a trading center and thus naturally became also a headquarters of some of the companies and workmen engaged in petroleum industries.

I never liked the scrub land sub dessert of west Texas and the southwest in general, but in the last 24 hours I have seen stupendous beauty both above and below the surface of this desolate landscape.
Carlsbad uses clear lighting leaving the cave looking natural, if not a bit bland.
I am typing this as we leave New Mexico and head back into Texas towards El Paso.

 New Mexico - Living Desert State Park
Carlsbad sits at the edge of the Great Plains of middle America - to the east stretch hundreds of miles of flat prairie, used mainly for ranching and oil exploration.
With a relatively low elevation of 3,400 feet, and summer temperatures that often exceed 100°F, this part of New Mexico is still classed as desert land, part of the Chihuahuan Desert which also extends across southeast Arizona, west Texas and the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
The varied plants and animals of this arid region are exhibited in the Living Desert State Park, which occupies several acres of cacti and yucca-strewn land on the edge of the Ocotillo Hills, overlooking the Pecos river valley just northwest of town.

The Guadalupe Mountains span the Texas/New Mexico border and rise to heights of 8,749 feet, in great contrast to the flat desert land all around.
Two National Parks are found within their range; Guadalupe Mountains (in Texas), which has rocky peaks and scenic valleys with varied wildlife, and Carlsbad Caverns, one of the oldest and most famous cave systems in the world.
This chasm is the place of egress for a colony of up to 300,000 Mexican free-tail bats that live in one of the branches of the cave below from April to September, and it is a memorable event at sunset to watch the colony emerge, which takes up to half an hour.

Well anyway, onto Carlsbad, New Mexico it was after stopping several different places for propane fuel (nothing was open or they didn't have a certified person able to fill our tank.) After stopping at Fort Stockton to see the historic fort, eat lunch and top of the truck tank we continued north.
New Mexico was the only state so far that didn't have a Visitor Welcome Center just across the state line.

Carlsbad, the "Oasis on the Pecos" is a pleasant and scenic little town sitting at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert.
Carlsbad is a slowly growing retirement center and provides decent shopping and dining with a laid-back style of life.
My two favorite places in Carlsbad are the Living Desert State Park on the edge of town, and the Fiesta Drive In, one of the very few drive-in movies left in the country.
