Jacob Christian Jacobsen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 1840s he had come to realise that production of beer, which had until then been done in numerous small breweries, now had to be based on scientific methods and to be industrialised.
Starting in 1844, he established his brewery Carlsberg (named after his son, Carl), on the outskirts of Copenhagen, on a site where it has remained since.
Jacobsen's extensive personal art collection is now housed in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum in Copenhagen which was founded by his son.

 Ny Carlsbergfondet - English summary
The New Carlsberg Foundation was established by a Charter dated 20 January 1902 enacted by the brewer Carl Jacobsen and his wife Ottilia Jacobsen with the object of working to promote art in the founders' native land of Denmark.
The aim of the New Carlsberg Foundation is to support the New Carlsberg Glyptotek and other Danish art museums, to promote the study of art and art history and in general to develop and fulfil the appreciation of and need for art in Denmark.
The Foundation's income consists partly of the returns on investment in a capital fund (which amounted to DKK 262 million in 2000) and partly of a share in the annual proceeds from shares held in Carlsberg A/S. The annual sum available for grants is approximately DKK 50 million.

The Carlsberg foundation is a principal benefactor of science and arts, including architecture - a tradition that has been extended internationally with the Carlsberg Architectural Prize.
The buildings of Gamle Carlsberg were excellent representatives for the architecture of their time.
The Carlsberg Brewery in Northampton, England, is an exception because the brewery won the 1975 Financial Times Award for Industrial Architecture.

Modern Brewery Age: Carlsberg lagging as market consolidates - Brief Article
Carlsberg executives say that for now the company is successfully carving out a niche as a medium-sized but highly internationalized player, with cash-flow from its core Western European operations financing growth in emerging markets.
Carlsberg holds 60 percent of stock in the joint venture, with Orkla controlling the remaining 40 percent.
Analysts agree that Carlsberg is hampered in the unfolding consolidation game by its cumbersome shareholder structure, which requires the Carlsberg Foundation, a nonprofit trust, to maintain a major interest.

When he died, Jacob left his entire estate, including the brewery, to the charitable Carlsberg Foundation, which continues to hold a controlling interest in the brewery.
The Foundation turned Jacob’s house into the so-called Danish House of Honor, occupancy of which was reserved for Denmark’s most distinguished citizen, and was considered to be the most prestigious address in the country, after the king’s palace.
An invitation to live in the House of Honor was considered a very significant honor and in the early 20th century, Knud Rasmussen, the Danish polar explorer was it’s occupant.

A model of Thor, the god of thunder, rides his chariot on the roof while a second arched entrance beyond the elephant gate is surmounted by portraits of members of the Jacobsen family and key brewery employees.
This is arguably the most revealing aspect of the tour for Carlsberg (long ago merged with Tuborg) produces a large range of beers that have rather more character than the thin lager made in Britain in the group's Northampton brewery.
Stronger Carlsberg and Tuborg beers, such as Carlsberg Elephant, have rich aromas and flavours, while Carlsberg Porter Stout is jet fl and has a complex molasses and scorched malt character.

Modern Brewery Age: Cathedral of brewing: tradition remains the byword at Denmark's Carlsberg Brewery
The story told by Carlsberg is that JC placed the pots of yeast under his stovepipe hat during that weeks-long stagecoach ride home, cooling the pots with water from streams at every coach stop.
The Foundation's initial and lasting purpose is "to benefit science and honor the country." Today the Foundation continues and advances research in Carlsberg Laboratories and promotes basic sciences.
Working with Tuborg and then Carlsberg beers, Hansen found several "bad" yeasts mixed in with the "good' yeast in the beers that were causing problems of unpleasant aromas and bitter flavors (this bitterness was not from hops, the usual suspect in beer bitterness).

In line with this, Orkla’s ambition was to further develop Carlsberg Breweries industrially and the stake in CB has accounted for approximately one third of the Orkla Group’s industrial operations.
However, in summer 2003 the attitude of the Carlsberg Foundation and CAS to the partnership that had been established changed.
The Carlsberg Foundation, which is the controlling shareholder in CAS, has increasingly expressed ambitions and attitudes which, in Orkla’s view, would not promote CB’s value creation and would weaken important intentions that were laid down in the cooperation agreement signed in 2000.
