Carlsten has been a Regents Professor since 1992, a prestigious distinction awarded to only three current MSU faculty members, and he was the director of the Optical Technology Center at MSU from 1992-1997.
Carlsten came to MSU from a post as an associate group leader at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Carlsten says he stays at MSU because he enjoys his research, the students, fly fishing and the mountains.

As Project Director, Carlsten’s strives to meet the goal of the program, which is to teach conflict resolution skills to graduate and undergraduate students of Georgia State University and other institutions of higher education so that they may teach those skills to students in the Grady Cluster of the Atlanta Public Schools.
During her tenure there, Carlsten helped mediated disputes with the Fulton County Department of Planning and Economic Development, worked with the Vincent Institute of Government at the University of Georgia in developing juvenile court mediation systems in the state of Georgia, provided training at the Settlement Institute, and mediated private cases.
It is the culmination and synthesis of all the interests she has had over the years: the opportunity to teach conflict resolution skills to many different types of people, and to have an impact on the Atlanta Public Schools and the larger community.
