Before the outside world discovered the Yukon, the Carmacks region was part of the traditional fishing, hunting, trapping and trading area of the Northern Tutchone people.
Carmack's cabin grew into a trading post, which was the beginning of present day Carmacks.
After the Mayo road was built, many of the Indians moved to Carmacks from the outlying areas, which bolstered the town's population.

The shorter race was lengthened 50 miles this year because of an increase in qualifiers needed to enter the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest.

Somebody was finally able to get a gun and shoot the bear, but not before the woman and man were killed.
e crossed into the Yukon Territory around noon, and were greeted by the famous "Sign Forest." Over the past 50 years, visitors have dropped off signs (homemade and otherwise) from their hometowns.
The signs grown in both number and creativity to the point where the "forest" is almost like a maze.

I am on the road again on Monday, June 12, this time to meet up with Buckwheat in Carmacks, Yukon for part of the paddling portion of his Heartbeat Trail journey on the Yukon River.

It would have been delicious anyway, but it was especially good because I caught the fish myself in the Yukon River.
The river was a major route of transportation during the 1898 gold rush, when gold seekers took homemade boats and rafts and paddled up to the gold fields of Dawson City.
Before taking a site in the local campground, I went down to the river's edge and watched the muddied green water flow swiftly past me. I think the water is green from glacial streams that flow into it.
