COTABATO CITY -- It's all systems go for the staging of the joint RP-US military exercise scheduled this month in Carmen, North Cotabato, which according to military and civilian authorities would be "brief" and "purely training on antiterrorism."
Some residents of North Cotabato and those from nearby provinces have expressed apprehension that the exercise might lead to clashes between troops, communist and Moro rebels.
North Cotabato, bounded by the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur, is sparsely inhabited by the communist New People's Army and the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front, suspected of coddling the Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian terror group allied with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda.

COTABATO CITY-With the joint US-led military exercises set to begin later this week in Carmen, North Cotabato, calls are mounting for the scrapping of the antiterrorism training of Philippine soldiers by American troops in the area.
The anti-terror training would be held outside the Army's 602nd Infantry Brigade headquarters in Carmen which is near an MILF-influenced area in the town.
North Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Piñol, however, allayed fears the so-called "mini-balikatan" would trigger another armed conflict in the province.

Virador said the lawmen tried their utmost in preventing the protesters from driving around Carmen, North Cotabato in protest against US soldiers participating in the military exercise in Central Mindanao.
The Inter-regional People’s Caravan, a 5,000strong delegation from key regions in Mindanao, trooped to Carmen to oppose the holding of the exercises in the area.

The fact-finding mission was prompted mainly by the “combat coverage” of the conflict by many journalists, mostly from national and international outfits that failed to focus on the “people aspect” and the root causes of the war.

COTABATO CITY, April 22 (PNA) - Thirty-five Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels surrendered Friday to the military in Carmen, North Cotabato.
The rebel returnees, led by Commander Bausi Sumalinog, belonged to the MILF's 8th Battalion of the 104th Brigade of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces.
Sumalinog was once a top security aide of the late Commander Kagui Manalos, leader of the MILF that led the attack on the multi-billion Malituhog-Marigao Irrigation Project in Carmen during the early 1990s.

PIKIT, Cotabato (22 Jan) -- Farm yields have tripled since President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Japanese deputy chief of mission Akeo Egawa inaugurated the newly-completed the 4.8-billion yen Malitubog-Maridagao Irrigation Project, also known as Mal-Mar Irrigation Project in Gucotan, Pikit, Cotabato and Kilangan in Pagalungan, Maguindanao on November 19, 2003.
The project, which the President dubbed as "a showcase for peace and development in Central Mindanao," is designed to 10,840 hectares of farmland, approximately half the size of the entire Camiguin Island or the entire Batanes Island, in the towns of Pikit, and Carmen, Cotabato and Pagalungan and Pagagawan towns in Maguindanao.
The diversion dam was inaugurated in September 2001 by President Arroyo in Carmen, North Cotabato.
