McRae would record pretty steadily up to 1989 and, although her voice was higher in the 1950s and her phrasing would be even more laidback in later years, her general style and approach did not change much through the decades.

Carmen McRae was not a particularly distinctive artist, nor was she one of our best-loved jazz singers, but she was always consistently good, and these two live CDs capture her at her best.
In fact, McRae had her ear specifically tuned to the goings on in pop radio at that time, as “For Once In My Life” and “All By Myself” are also given jazz treatments here.
Her take on Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself” is especially effective, since she wisely removed some of the originator’s unnecessary excess drama, and changed it into a much quieter meditation on loneliness.

Carmen McRae is supported by a good small group, directed and arranged by Ralph Burns, featuring guitarist Mundell Lowe and many solos for an uncredited "tenorman" (i.e., Ben Webster).
Both McRae and Webster do their best on the driving, horn-heavy score for "Bob White (Whatcha Gonna Swing Tonight)." First, Webster follows closely along with trumpeter Irwin "Marky" Markowitz while McRae vocalizes clearly and with some swing, then launches a beautiful solo before McRae returns for the closer.
