Topic: Carnage (band)

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

  Carnage - Swedish Death Metal
Some riffs are shared with bands who share members with this formative act, but for the most part riffcraft attains unique linguistics of the shape of sound, fearless in a desire to use whatever means communicate no matter how simple or abstract.
It is a science of shape that bends phrases into sigils and twisting those in a primordial light converts them into a anecdotal sequence of ideas that reaches a point of declaration of form, then immerses itself in the absence of light to reveal its impetus in negative space.
Dissident, Carnage unites the uncurling melodies of Dismember with the explosive surge in rhythm of Entombed, but with allusions to the careful pacing of song as a theatre of conflicting desires that marked Unleashed; it is a lower-technology but more organic version of that triad of Swedish death metal to later emerge.

The band hit the road for a self-financed U.S. tour in the fall of 1997, alerting many to the unbelievable CEPHALIC CARNAGE live show…something that must be witnessed to be believed.
A crushing set at the 1998 Milwaukee Metalfest cemented the band’s name in the minds of music fans and journalists and verified all accounts of their (now) legendary live performances as the band laid waste to Metalfest attendees with one of the best sets of the entire festival.
The band also appeared at the 1999 Dallas Grindfest, the 1999 March Metal Meltdown, the 1999 Ohio Deathfest, the 1999 Denver Hatefest, the 1999 Milwaukee Metalfest and the 1999 November To Dismember, stopping at nothing to bring their futuristic ultra-grind to the masses.

A four-piece at the time of the recording, the band was stronger than ever as the duel-guitar onslaught merged effortlessly with extremely technical drumming and Lenzig's wildly schizophrenic vocal attack.

Anomalies was recorded in late 2004 with Dave Otero at Flatline Audio in the band’s hometown of Denver and showed CEPHALIC’s skill for intermixing spine-tingling passages of hypersonic grindcore, slow motion doom metal and far-out rock and roll, beckoning listeners to enter their outlandish musical world.

What Carnage lacks in contemporary flair is more than made up for with the uncompromisingly intense music.
Carnage seems less a combination of doom, thrash, and stoner metal than an elixir of each sub-genre's darkest and most evil manifestations.

It seems that the theory is that cleaner, higher registered vocals would both draw some distinction between the band and their competition, as well as accentuate the band’s vintage leanings.

Then we have Cephalic Carnage, a Denver-based quintet who've made a pesky habit out of melding numerous styles of experimental music with death metal and grindcore.
Though the band truly established itself as a key player in the burgeoning avant-garde metal community with its 2002 release Lucid Interval, Cephalic Carnage have spent the better part of 13 years smoking weed, touring extensively, and-- most importantly-- knocking metalheads like me on our asses.

Cephalic Carnage: Anomalies - PopMatters Music Review
Cephalic Carnage are a very easy extreme metal band to like, simply because they refuse to confine themselves in the rigid structures of traditional death metal and grindcore, and they're up to the same old tricks on Anomalies.
The band's progressive hardcore element still remains prevalent, as several tracks contain impressive (and often brilliant) time signature changes and furious drumming by John Merryman, highlighted by tracks such as "Wraith", "Enviovore", and "Litany of Failure".
They might be veterans now, but Cephalic Carnage are still capable of surprising listeners, and their descent into slower territory on a couple tracks provide the album's most memorable moments.

Formed in 1976, the Cure is one of the few bands that emerged from England during the punk explosion to endure far beyond that scene and evolve into a significant band.

This band just doesnt slow down. The guitar sound here is total necro (or perhaps that should be the bass sound, since the bass player is called Necrobutcher), all fuzzy, buzzing mid range tones, with not a lot of bottom end.
Unlike a lot of fl metal, it is well produced, sounding like a band that has grown out of the garage sound, and also lacks the cheese factor of inverted crosses and pentagrams soaked in blood on the packaging, and lyrically speaks beyond something blaspheming the Christian church.
Then comes Carnage, which is a little less interesting, but then the album goes on good until the ultimate song of the album, my personal favorite MayheM song, which features incredible drumming from their drummer, Hellhammer, who hits his drums so fast you wont be able to hear every hit...hes really incredible.

Many bands suddenly seem to be developing pretentious ideals of bringing the "true spirit" of heavy metal back to life, and merely use this new philosophy in life as a pretext to rip the sleeves of their jeans jackets and align a few simplistic, unimaginative riffs and solos.
However, Ritual Carnage's first offering, _The Highest Law_, stood out among the tasteless mass of generally lame revival/tribute bands, with its sweaty, ultra mean leather n' spikes attitude, simple but incredibly addictive songs, and, last but not least, its excellently cliched cover.
