Carnarvon is a national park in Queensland (Australia), 593 km northwest of Brisbane.
Carnarvon National Park protects part of the Consuelo Tableland and is one of the most popular parks in Queensland.
The park is accessible from either Rolleston or Injune along the Carnarvon Highway.

The town of Carnarvon, named after Lord Carnarvon, the British Secretary of State (1866-74), was gazetted in 1883 and for most of its early life it served as a port and supply depot for the surrounding pastoral industry.
Carnarvon is often seen as the major town for visits to Monkey Mia and certainly a number of one day and two day trips leave from the town.
Findlay was Artist-in-Residence in Carnarvon in 1983 and, as a professional photojournalist, she captured the spirit of the town in a way that few local histories do.

Roma sits at the junction of the Warrego and Carnarvon highways - strike south on the Carnarvon Highway and you are on your way to St George while the road north passes through Injune on the way to the spectacular Carnarvon Gorge.
The Warrego Highway runs through Roma as Bowen Street, and it's here on the eastern side of town you're greeted by the Big Rig, a drilling tower left as a monument to the oil boom of the 1920s, and beside it the information centre (daily 9am-5pm; tel 07/4622 4355).
The train station is one block south of the highway on Station Street at the corner of Charles Street (tel 07/4622 9411), and the bus terminal is on Bowen Street by the BP roadhouse near the Big Rig.

Like most coastal urban areas, residential subdivision in Carnarvon has gone upmarket recently with "canal" type lots going on sale offering direct frontage to ‘The Fascine’, the arm of the Gascoyne which flows through town.
I’m not sure whether in Carnarvon’s case, this is a good thing, but perhaps, as an interloper, it’s not for me to judge.

In September 2004 I toured Queensland's Carnarvon Highway, showing me a side of Australia I had never seen before.
Heading out of St George, the highway passes through beautiful, endless plains dominated by an amazingly vast sky, and abounding with wildlife such as emus (third picture from top.) We drove on to the historic town of Surat still pulsing with quaint energy (pictures four and five) before reaching the Warrego Highway at Roma.
The highway technically ends at Roma, however NR55 continues north along the Carnarvon Developmental Road through Injune, where I enjoyed a couple of memorable hours at the Injune Hotel (bottom photo).
