  Carnatic shipwreck
The Carnatic is a famous shipwreck, a steamer ship that was on the Suez/Bombay run in the last years before the Suez Canal was opened.
In September 1869 it ran aground on a coral reef near Shadwan Island[?] in the Red Sea.
Onboard Carnatic was £40,000 worth of gold (well in excess of £1,000,000 in modern terms), so the wreck was the subject of a salvage operation barely two weeks later.

Carnatic music is largely devotional; most of the songs are addressed to the Hindu deities.
The Carnation Revolution (Portuguese, ''Revolução dos Cravos'') was an almost bloodless left-leaning revolution started on April 25, 1974, in Lisbon, Portugal, that effectively changed the Portuguese regime from an authoritarian dictatorship to a liberal democracy at the end of a two-year process of a communist-dominated military administration.
The carnation is the symbol of this revolution, since soldiers put these flowers in their guns, in what came to symbolise the absence of violence for changing the regime in Portugal—a regime that had been one of the longest rightist dictatorships of the 20th century.

The Peninsula and Oriental Passenger Steamer "Carnatic" was built by Samuda Bros of London and classified as an "iron framed planked passenger steamer of 1776 tons." Her dimensions were 89.8m x 11.6m with a draught of 7.8m.
The Carnatic was launched in December 1862 and registered by P and O (although that abbreviation was not used in those days) in March 1863.
The most incredible part of this entire shipwreck is that, whilst the ship went to the bottom in two separate halves, those two halves then fell together on the seabed - just as they might have done had the ship gone down as one piece.

The Carnatic was launched in December 1862 and, after successful sea trials, was registered by P and O (though that abbreviation was not used in those days) in the March of 1863 before sailing for Calcutta on June 27th.
The Carnatic was a sleek vessel with proud lines and, unlike many of the hybrid "sail and steam" ships of the period, this vessel responded well to either form of power - thus giving her a definite advantage when other ships were becalmed.
Although we did genuinely discover this shipwreck - all by ourselves, clearly we were not the first to have found her - and I suppose we never thought we would be.

In the days long before the title "P and O" was coined, the company which owned the Carnatic was known as the Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company and, for most of her working life, they employed this ship between Suez, Bombay and China.
Prior to the opening of the Suez Canal, passengers would sail from the UK as far as Alexandria where they would endure a 200 mile overland journey to Suez, by camel train, before joining another vessel and resuming their voyage to the Far East.
The Board of Trade enquiry decided the stranding of the Carnatic was "due to a grave default of the Master" and consequently suspended his Master's certificate for 9 months.
