SummitPost - Carnedd Llewelyn -- Climbing, Hiking & Mountaineering
Carnedd Llewelyn is a mountain in the Carneddau (Cairns in Welsh) range in Snowdonia, northern Wales.
It is thought to be named after one of the Welsh princes named Llewelyn in the thirteenth century, but it is not known whether this is Llywelyn the Great or his grandson Llywelyn ap Gruffydd.
Carnedd Llewelyn is located in the middle of the Carneddau range, connected with the ridges to Carnedd Dafydd (1044 m., second highest in the Carneddau) in the southwest, Yr Elen (962 m.) in the northwest, Foel Grach (976 m.) in the north and Pen Yr Helgi Du (833 m.) in the southeast.

Carnedd Llewelyn is notoriously tricky to navigate on in bad weather, as its summit is a large featureless plateau fringed with cliffs to the East side.

After a recent visit to Cefn Carnedd Hill Fort in Wales I decided to include this brief summery regarding the possibility of it being an alternative site for Caradoc's last stand against the Romans.
Many historians believe that this area was indeed the place where the battle was fought, and it does meet almost all of the criteria described in the sources that are available to us concerning the battle, namely the description given by Tacitus in his work, "The Annals of Imperial Rome."
The River Severn meandering its way through the Caersws Basin flows at the foot of Cefn Carnedd and does have all the appearance of presenting a substantial barrier to an invading army.

Carnedd Dafydd is a mountain peak in the Carneddau range in Snowdonia, north Wales, and is the third highest peak in Wales, or the fourth if Crib y Ddysgl on the Snowdon ridge is counted.
Situated south-west of Carnedd Llewelyn and north of Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd is on the main ridge of the Carneddau, and on the border between Gwynedd and Conwy.
The origin of its name, which translates as Dafydd's (or David's) cairn, like that of its neighbouring peak, Carnedd Llewelyn (Llywelyn's cairn), is the subject of some confusion.
