Carnegie Mellon participants and other project partners in the United States have visited India and China to train the scanning personnel and meet with project administrators to develop project plans.
Research recently conducted by Carnegie Mellon University Libraries to improve our understanding of the graduate student experience exposed their frustration with the amount of time it takes to get the materials they need for teaching and coursework because the Libraries' electronic resources are not easy to use.
Carnegie Mellon has established a workflow (based on pilot, 100-book and 1000-book projects) that includes steps to insure capture of high resolution images and essential metadata, post-processing to correct skewing and crop dark borders surrounding the page images, and OCRing to create searchable ASCII text with 98% accuracy.

Carnegie Mellon experts will collaborate with NASA scientists and researchers from universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Maryland, University of Southern California, University of Washington and University of Wisconsin, to measure and improve the dependability of NASA’s systems.

In large measure, because of their research and proactive work with AP computer science high school teachers, a cultural transformation is taking place at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, which enjoys one of the nation’s most successful programs for women in this field.
While other schools across the country are witnessing declines in the number of women enrolled in computer science, the number of women in Carnegie Mellon’s program has jumped from 8 percent of a class of 110 in 1995 to 40 percent of a class of 129 in 2000.

Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science (SCS) has installed more than 100 powerful new Apple iMac computers in its A. Nico Habermann Computing Classroom, a facility that serves between 1,100 and 1,200 students each academic year.
Peter Lee, professor of computer science and associate dean for undergraduate education, noted that the new iMacs are as exciting for researchers as well as for the teaching faculty.
The Habermann cluster is named for the late Nico Habermann who established the School of Computer Science as a college at Carnegie Mellon in 1989 and influenced the careers of many of the students who passed through its doors.
