Amoung them were Thomas Carney and William Summerill who settled here about 1727.The former homesteaded on the point of land jutting into the Delaware River, hence the name "Carney Point" for the township's largest community.
Thomas Carney Summerill, publisher of the Penns Grove Record, in addition to numbering both of the origional families among his forebears, carries the name of the founder of the township.
A new charter was obtained in 1868 and the work was finally completed in 1872 at a total cost of $50,000.

CARNEYS POINT, N.J. – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Susan Bass Levin today awarded $2,102,000 in Small Cities Community Development Block Grants to seven Salem County municipalities.
“The Carney’s Point YMCA has long been a place where families, youths and our senior citizens benefit from, through their community involvement projects to the recreational amenities; the YMCA is an appropriate place for state money to be used,” commented Assemblyman John J. Burzichelli (D-3).
The Township will also use its funding to remove architectural barriers to disabled residents at the newly acquired Township Community Center, including the installation of a two-stop elevator and the construction of a new ground floor entryway, stair lift and other interior accessibility improvements.

I-295 comes in from the west and heads off to the northeast, the un-numbered New Jersey Turnpike starts at the Tollgate, US 40 comes in from the west with I-295 and goes east just south of the Turnpike and US 130 heads off to the north.
Several major routes (US 40, I-295, the New Jersey Turnpike) all come together here for the crossing of the Delaware River into Delaware (the Delaware Memorial Bridge's parallel spans are just off the map to the west).
These interchanges have all of the hallmarks of 'New Jersey' design, with interstate compatibility where it is needed while the other needed ramps are seemingly 'jumbled' together in just the right ways.
