Carniolan honeybee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bee is the sub-species of the Western honeybee that has naturalized and adapted to the Krain region of Slovenia, the Southern part of the Austrian Alps and North Balkan.
Carniolan honeybees are about the same size as the Italian honeybee race, but they are physically distinguished by their generally dusky brown-grey color that is relieved by stripes of a subdued lighter brown color.
Carniolan bees are nearly as big and long as the Western European fl bees, though their abdomens are much slimmer.

The Carniolan minimizes brood production during a nectar shortage, forming a small colonies in the fall enabling it to winter on a minimum of stores, which is distinctly different from the Italian bee that requires large stores for the winter period.
The BEST bee is the bee that best suits your style of beekeeping need and not that bee proclaimed the "best" by any writer (including me), or your friend Uncle Tom, or even the world's greatest bee scientist who may have more knowledge of honey bees than you have.

The semen from carniolan bees is believed to be more resistant to the varroa mite than the Italian breed of bees, which is the mainstay of the New Zealand honey industry.
It is hoped the crossbred bees produced by the queens will stand up to varroa mites, which have been wiping out hives of Italian bees as they have spread through much of the North Island over the past four years.
But some beekeepers have said it is likely that the parasitic varroa mites discovered in New Zealand in 2000 arrived on queen bees smuggled into the country by a beekeeper trying to "improve" the bloodlines in his hives.

Meanwhile, Mr Yanke will import more carniolan bee semen in August in his attempt to create close to purebred colonies which will be evaluated for honey production, temperament and, of course, their tolerance to the invasive mites.
