In 1956, he won Trinidad's Carnival Road March Competition with his most famous song, "Jean and Dinah".
His prize was $40, and in protest of the small sum, he wrote "Carnival Boycott" the following year, a song which spoke out against Trinidad's carnival industry.
Sparrow refused to participate in the Carnival Road March for the next three years, but still became one of the Caribbean's most successful artists.

Something unique I havent seen on any other road marches, they provide these small sealed plastic bags of ice water, fruit juice or rum and juice and everybody has a great time with the ice water squirting it on yuh friends...lots of fun.
Of course, I will have to disagree that JA carnival is anti-climatic to Cropover and it goes without saying that all WI carnivals can't compare to Trinidad.

It was played 334 times, according to the organisers which included the National Carnival Commission and the Downtown Carnival Committee, while Shurwayne Winchester's Ah Cyah Wait, which won the International Soca Monarch last Friday, was played 98 times, and Machel's Scandalous, which many thought would have placed second, was third after being played 91 times.
