Carnival of Souls - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carnival of Souls is a fl and white horror cult film released in 1962.
Produced and directed by Herk Harvey for $33,000, the movie, which varies in length from 78 to 84 minutes depending on the edition, never gained widespread public attention when it was originally released, and today is still a very obscure film.
A limited release of a 1989 Jane's Addiction concert was also title Carnival of Souls.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- CARNIVAL OF SOULS
Sadly, CARNIVAL OF SOULS was amongst those horror films that disappeared from view (as were the Barbara Steele movies that I still sorely miss) during the video generation.
As Mary's detachment from the world around her intensifies, she feels a compulsion to return to the abandoned carnival groundsÂ… the place that seems to hold the answers that she is looking for.
CARNIVAL OF SOULS is presented in its intended 1.33:1 aspect ratio and the transfer is surprisingly good for an obscure low budget movie from 1961.

Carnival Of Souls was almost certainly inspired by the half-hour Twilight Zone episode, "The Hitch-Hiker," as Edmund G. Bansak has noted in his excellent book on Val Lewton, Fearing The Dark (McFarland and Company, 1995).
Fundamentally, Carnival Of Souls is a visual exploration of death, which, in the course of this exploration, sees death from a subjective point of view that is at times reminiscent of Carl Dreyer's "Vampyr".
In short, this "carnival of souls" is the pole diametrically opposite that of the church in which she has taken up her music, and the early part of the film shows her continually vacillating between these points of dubious refuge.

Carnival of Souls at Brian's Drive-In Theater
Carnival of Souls was originally released in April 1962 by Herts-Lion International.
Playing mostly to the drive-in circuit, Carnival of Souls didn't generate a great deal of interest in its initial release; nevetheless, the film proved to be groundbreaking and influential.
Carnival of Souls was released to DVD in March 2000, and the Criterion Collection edition really is the copy to own.

Carnival of souls is a very atmospheric and bizzare film about a young woman on the boundary between life and death.
From his crow's nest shots of her wandering through the deserted carnival to the scenes of her lone sedan traversing the twilight prairie highway, he unfailingly delivers a picture of un-peopled vastness--a vastness that cannot be breached by human or psychic outreach.

DVD Verdict Review - Carnival Of Souls: Criterion Collection
Carnival of Souls was a lost gem of a film until only recently when it made the fantastical trip from obscurity to cult classic, seemingly overnight.
Disc one of the set includes the original theatrical release of the film, cut down by its con-man distributor to 78 minutes (for what reason is anybody's guess, but the theory is he needed the extra five minutes shaved off to include the film in a double bill), as well as several intriguing extras.
Carnival of Souls is a rare treat—a gem of a film undiscovered by most of America and, I would guess, most of the world.

And so then a bunch of guys start doing research, and they find out that "Carnival of Souls" was made by a guy named Herk Harvey, and this was the only feature film he ever made, and it stars a gal named Candace Hilligoss, and this was the only starring role she ever had.
And, in fact, just last week, "Carnival of Souls" was shown in Lawrence, Kansas, for the first time in 27 years, as a benefit for the "Lawrence Film Commission." Herk Harvey was there.

Carnival of Souls was a cut-rate film even by 1962 standards.
What's scary in Carnival of Souls is rarely what happens but what you think might happen, as the pale face that looms outside Henry's car window or behind the door to her room drives her already distracted mind toward the abandoned pavilion, shown usually at dusk, often in lengthy, expressionistic shadows.
It would be easy to ridicule Carnival of Souls, with its cheesy musical score, mediocre acting, cut-rate sound quality and awkward dialogue.

Like the ethereal character she portrays in Carnival of Souls, Candace Hilligoss has been blindsided in real life by a disturbing phenomena she is unprepared to deal with -- the shifty machinations behind the making of a film in Hollywood.
