Carny - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carny is the singular slang for a carnival employee, as well as the language they employ.
Carnies are typified as sly and coercive salespeople, but the term itself merely refers to any employee of a travelling circus or carnival, regardless of behavior or intention.
Carny is a 1980 movie directed by Robert Kaylor and starring Gary Busey, Jodie Foster, Robbie Robertson, and Meg Foster.

 Letter from a Carny
As a former carny (now a political science student interning in D.C.), I feel that you are in need of enlightenment.
Carnies do not pay taxes, most do not have an address and they do not stay in the same city for more than a week or two.
In fact, although most carnies are paid pitifully low wages, a man could find himself with a rather ample bank account after a single season.

 Carny (1980) - Directed by Robert Kaylor : Remote Control : Pif No. 37 - June 2000
Carny was very much the pet project of Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist /songwriter for The Band, and anyone familiar with Robertson’s music will recall his song "Life is a Carnival" from the group’s Cahoots L.P. that first pointed towards Robertson’s fascination with the carnival.
Robertson plays Patch, a carny shill who works and lives in an odd symbiosis with Frankie (Gary Busey, wonderful here), star of the "Mighty Bozo" act, where he — dressed in clown make-up — insults patrons who throw baseballs at his cage to knock him in a tank of water.
The carny presses on, but soon an evil local massage parlor maven named Dill (Bill McKinney), who blames the carny for stealing his business, shows up with Skeet and asks Patch and carny boss Heavy (Kenneth McMillan) for kickbacks and for the sexual services of Donna for Skeet.

Carnies do not pay taxes, most do not have an address and they do not stay in the same city for more than a week or two. That unusual odor that one detects around carnies is mostly B.O. and cigarettes.
However, every once in a while, a carny will use that time to scrape off the diverse collections of crud that have gathered in all of the nooks and crannies of his body.Though it depends on the carnival, many carnies are paid under the table.
For example, obese carny women usually do not have a problem finding someone to share their shack with at night.OK, I realize that I have not given a very impassioned defense of the carny way of life.

Carnys call these "alibi games," because the operator uses a long litany of excuses to keep the mark from giving up in disgust, and encouraging him to dig more money out of his wallet and try "just one more time" to win a stuffed animal that his girlfriend doesn't even really want.
The secret of the game is this; the carny demonstrates by tossing a ball from his postion, behind the counter.
The carny trick is to place the basket at just the correct angle so that it is nearly impossible to hit the upper edge from the customer throw line.

 EI > Video Risks > CARNY (1980)
CARNY (1980) - I was stuck at a railroad crossing a few years ago as the Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus train passed by.
Produced, starring and co-written by The Band's Robbie Robertson, the 1980 film Carny offers a peak inside the world of traveling carnival workers or "carnies." This work of love on Robertson's part is a gritty, unromanticized journey through the lives of hucksters, con artists, hootchie cootchie dancers, and sideshow freaks.
Carny appeals to that primal urge in me. If you too, have such a deep desire to pick up and leave, then you might understand the deep appeal this movie holds for me. Of course, I can't run away and join the circus, so the next best thing is renting Carny.

Donald Joseph: Review of Carny -- the Movie & the Album
"Carny" is particularly important in the Band's body of solo work because it represents probably the most significant dramatic lead film performance of any Band member -- and its soundtrack is Robbie Robertson's first solo album effort.
There was some problem with its release and distribution; I remember trying to find a theater in Florida showing it first-run, and having to track it down at a seedy drive-in (in retrospect, sort of an appropriate venue, I guess).  Somehow it missed a major release.
After sifting through what has been said to be a mountain of offers, Robertson worked up "Carny," apparently because the subject attracted him (lots of critics drew the connection to "Life Is a Carnival").

 Sex, Lies, and Carnival Lots
After a big ceremony with many carnies in attendance, they were married by the owner of our side show, and the couple spent the traditional honeymoon night at the top of the highest ferris wheel on the lot.
They were not financially dependent on the owner, because in the carny life they could have easily moved to working a joint or another job and probably make more money than he was paying them to work in the sideshow.
In that case, it was carnies posing as marks who roamed the midway with the animals.

"John Zorn's Carny, written for me, Yvar Mikhashoff, and Anthony DeMare under a grant from Meet the Composer, is in some respects the most complex piece of music I have performed -- a complexity not just of notes, but of meanings and inferences as well.
More than simply a succession of fragments and styles (some of astonishing difficulty), Carny is an implosion of references in which the meaning of each gesture collides with both the image of its source in the listener's memory and its juxtapositions in the piece as a whole.
Carny, in its juxtapositions, says difficult things in as simple a manner as possible.
