ESR | May 17, 2004 | The curious case of Nick Berg
Apparently, the FBI was not buying Berg's rendition of events either, as they reportedly interviewed Berg post-9/11 in the US, and subsequently in recent weeks when he was held in custody for a short period by Iraqi police.
Reportedly, Berg was in possession of the Koran and anti-Semitic materials in Iraq, which is thoroughly incongruent with being a "good Jew." And, he was wearing an Islamic-style beard at the time of is death.
Michael Berg has made the rather bizarre public statement, "My son died for the sins of George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld", when in fact government officials attempted to ship Nick Berg back to the US in order to get him out of harm's way.

Carol Berg's fantasy trilogy, culminating in the brilliant third novel, "Restoration," is what every series of this genre strives to be.
Berg's vividly-imagined world in which demons, gods, and winged men vie for domination of the human race, is done with rich detail, flawless execution, and riveting storytelling.
Berg's ability to create two strong, fascinating protagonists is impressive in and of itself, but the fact that she places Seyonne, a former slave and current sorcerer, and Aleksander, conflicted heir to the empire's throne, in such a strong setting and plotline is quite an achievement.

Berg is a master world-builder, but you'll miss a lot if you read too fast, which is too easy in these books.
The one thing I absolutely love about Carol Berg is that her writing just gets better and better.
Berg decided that the story couldn't stay where it was (which surprised me, since I was extremely happy with the ending of the third, but who am I to complain?).

Sixteen years of slavery have left Seyonne with little sense of who he is, or who he used to be; Carol Berg's Transformation is the story of how he gradually comes to know himself and becomes a player in the game of empires and kings.
Berg has created a world in which there are several sorts of magic that hardly overlap, and whose local bigotries --Seyonne, once a leader of his people, has been dishonoured forever by capture--are credibly unpleasant.
Mit Seyonne schafft Berg einen Charakter, der sich in seinem Elend eine eigene Welt mit der abgeklärten Philosophie eines Sklaven, der nichts Gutes mehr vom Leben zu erwarten hofft, geschaffen hat.

Happily, I was pleasantly surprised upon reading this latest novel from Carol Berg.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed it and though this is the first novel from Berg I've read it definitely won't be the last.

Carol Berg's 'Rai-Kirah' trilogy "Transformation," "Revelation," and "Restoration" is so believable (well, except for the wizards and demons), it almost falls into the category of historical fiction.
It is narrated by Seyonne who was once a mighty wizard and Warden against demonkind, then a slave to Prince Aleksander, then the savior of demonkind and a wizard-in-exile, and finally in "Restoration," a mighty winged warrior who fights for the deposed heir-apparent to a fantastical Arabian Nights Empire.
This third book in Berg's trilogy has prodigious battles, hair's-breadth escapes, and journeys to locales from her previous two novels, including the land of the demons.

My only problem with the flashbacks was that Berg would often chose to begin a lengthy flashback just as the action in the present time was becoming interesting, so that I found it somewhat difficult to remain interested in the book.
Carol manages to create very visual, tactile scenes with precision and economy of words, so you feel yourself in the story, bypassing the infamous sort of over-extended descriptions.
The world Carol creates is currently ruled by people of the most unpleasant ilk, whom Seri rightly scorns.

Transformation by Carol Berg - Book
‘Transformation’ is an apt title for Carol Berg’s debut as it refers to layers of transformations that occur within the trilogy.
However, as the story proceeds it’s evident that they possess much in common: a fierce loyalty to their prospective nations; a willingness to acknowledge both their failings and strengths; and the particular type of cliched honour common to fantasy protagonists.
Berg has a smooth writing style, and her prose is easy to read without being simple or banal.

It's written in first person, and it dovetails the current impoverished exile of Seri, a noblewoman, with flashbacks of her painful past, when 10 years earlier her beloved husband was tortured and killed by the rulers of the land as a sorcerer and her newborn child taken from her and murdered.
But the level of angst she writes over the course of hundreds of pages can be off-putting.
It's a good thing that Berg's characters are resilient for everything she puts them through.
