I think one could make the argument that the workforce in the biomedical sciences is changing in a lot of ways and as we try to encourage people to go into these fields, and as NIH tries to encourage team science, I think we can expect to see more of this.
Carol Garrison: There’s been a lot of discussion about the traditional model where a student comes out, they get a tenure track position, and they stay in a particular academic career for the lifespan of their work.
Carol Garrison: I think the issue that you pointed out is one that’s not specific just to interdisciplinary programs and it’s true that most institutions tend not to hire their own doctoral students for faculty positions.

Since the fall of 1998, freshman enrollment is up 20 percent, with the number of out-of-state students increasing by one-third.
