NEA: NEA Today: News -- March 2001
To Kolb's surprise, the plaintiff and her lawyer appeared one day at school to serve her with a subpoena to testify in this case.
Kolb felt strongly that there was only one version of the facts, so she declined to "prepare" her court testimony with school board attorney David Wallace and Superinten-dent Carol Burns.
Though Kolb has been a longtime NEA member, she never was what people would consider an "activist." Now, she's fully aware that NEA stands up for all members, including the "average" member.

Kolb emphasized that what Schoomaker is worried about is the Defense Department's policy regarding how long after a deployment a National Guard or Army Reserve unit can be certified as fit to redeploy, without what's called "cross-leveling" -- that is, taking soldiers from other units to get the full unit back up to deployment readiness.
According to Kolb, the head of the Army National Guard, Lieutenant General Clyde Vaughn, favors a more-restrictive policy on Guard-unit redeployment -- understandably, from Vaughn's persective -- but Schoomaker hasn't come to a decision on what the new policy should be.
Kolb wouldn't answer my questions as to when exactly Schoomaker grew so alarmed as to speak out in public, or what the "magic number" is for when a Guard or Reserve unit is "ready" to redeploy back to a combat zone.

New Venture For Weekly Paper

Onion Editor-in-chief Carol Kolb said the newspaper staff has confidence that first-time directors Tom Kuntz and Mike Maguire, who have filmed commercials and sketches for MTV, can bring that unique Onion flavor to film.
The screenplay, which is credited to longtime Onion writer-editors Robert Siegel and Todd Hanson, is entirely original material, with a couple of references that longtime Onion fans will recognize.
Kolb said that writing a screenplay wasn't a totally alien experience for writers who have spent years writing fake news stories like "Gen. Tommy Franks to Leave Army to Pursue Solo Bombing Projects" and "Area Man Confounded by Buffet Procedure."
