There's some good character moments between the Doctor and Susan, and Carole Ann Ford works well to portray a Susan now willing to defy her grandfather's wishes - we've come a long way from the inquisitive teenager of 100 000 BC.
Carole appears to check on John's progress, commenting on how the Sensorites can't be told apart, except for their sashes, leading to the brilliant line from the City Adiministrator "I have never thought of that."; highlighting one flaw in the Sensorite system of rule.
With Carole's abduction, the Dcotor and Ian's mission sabotaged and the promise of Barbara's arrival on the Sense-Sphere, the final episode is set up to be a thriller.

Carole Ann Ford has stated that Susan was supposed to be developed into some kind of "Avengers Girl"; using judo etc to subdue the enemies.
There are occasions however, where she is allowed a little more free reign; notably her refusal to marry in The Aztecs; which probably was influenced by her friendship with Ping-Cho in Marco Polo.

The Tertiary Console Room: Review - Doctor Who Unbound - Auld Mortality
When Carole Ann Ford played Susan on television forty years ago the essential problem with her character was that there was little of the mystique that surrounded the Doctor, despite the fact that they were both outsiders and exiles from their then unknown race.
Ford herself is very assured in her performance, which is her first for Big Finish, giving Susan a dignity fitting for her role here, and as such it's arguably her best ever one in Doctor Who.
She develops a tremendous rapport with Geoffrey Bayldon and they bring to life the scenes of reflection between the Doctor and his granddaughter beautifully to the extent that it is both poignant and emotionally stirring.

Doctor Who LogBook - Season 1: 1963-64   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The entire internal mythology of the series is built upon a few scant, vague bits of dialogue in part one: the Doctor and Susan are from "another world, another time." They're on the run from unspecified people or circumstances.
Ian and Barbara are two of the best companions ever seen in the show, and much of this is owed to their maturity; never again in the TV series, unless one counts Romana, did the Doctor travel with anyone who was clearly into his or her thirties.
A nice, simple little story, this two-parter (what a relief after The Daleks!) is sidetracked by some occasionally goofy acting, especially from Carole Ann Ford, who as Susan seems to shriek at almost anything that moves over the course of the story.

DVD Times - Doctor Who: The Aztecs
The Aztecs, written by John Lucarotti, concerns the Doctor (William Hartnell), his granddaughter Susan (Carol Ann Ford) and their schoolteacher companions Ian Chesterton (William Russell) and Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill) travelling back in time to fifteenth century Mexico, at the centre of the Aztec civilization.
In contrast, Ian is demoted to a bland ‘matinee hero’ role, while the Doctor is sidelined to a light comedy subplot and Susan (due to a fortnight’s holiday for actress Carol Ann Ford) hardly appears for the middle two episodes, except in film inserts.
The commentary itself, by producer Verity Lambert OBE and actors Russell Enoch (formerly William Russell) and Carole Ann Ford, is the most disappointing aspect of the disc.
