Topic: Carole Hersee

Design Observer: writings about design & culture: Dmitri Siegel: The Mysterious Disappearance of Carol Hersee
As Carol joins the composing stick and the California type-case in the dustbin of design history, the public loses yet another tangible connection to the process of design and an oddly comforting reminder that culture is essentially a mechanical process.
He used Carol’s picture simply to demonstrate to the management of BBC2 that a test card featuring a picture of a person would be the most useful graphic for adjusting the color performance of the channel’s cameras and monitors.
Hersee once admitted that the BBC considered using a South Asian model with a bindi forehead marking for this purpose; apparently, the white cross on its fl background proved more versatile.

The Null Device: comments on "200104200409_testcardf"
You probably haven't heard of him, but he was responsible for Test Card F, the (in)famous TV test pattern with the little girl playing noughts and crosses with a sinister-looking toy clown.
The model on the card was his daughter Carole, whose photo he used for testing the calibration of skin tones.
Carole, now grown up with two kids, soon grew sick of her 15 minutes (or, more precisely, 70,000 hours) of fame, and of people constantly asking her about the test card.

Designed by George Hersee and featuring his daughter Carole Hersee, it made its first appearance on BBC2 in 1967.
Carol is caught smiling at the camera, in a game of noughts and crosses she has apparently entered into with a grinning, clown like toy.
She looks cautiously optimistic about her next move, the central square still tantalisingly vacant, but the gloating rictus of the green jump-suited clown clearly indicates that he is resplendent in the knowledge that victory is assured.

As a kind of homage to George Hersee, the colours I have used were 'eye-droppered' from Test Card F. ABC Television, one of the ITV companies, also experimented with 405-line colour, using all three of the then available standards - NTSC, SECAM and PAL.
If anyone hasn't heard, the model is the then nine-year-old Carole, daughter of the late George Hersee who died in 2001 and who designed the test card in 1967.
There are a few technical differences between those and Test Card F, but the most noticeable is a complete remastering of the picture of Carole from the original transparency, putting the chalk cross in the dead centre of the card and revealing for the first time the clown's left leg.

As the portly, bumbling host of 3,959 editions of the weekday- afternoon words-and-numbers quiz show Countdown, he was an iconic character beloved by pensioners, housewives, shift workers and students.
Yorkshire Television subsequently persuaded Channel 4 to commission it as a four-times-a-week afternoon programme, the first to be broadcast on Britain's fourth terrestrial channel, on 2 November 1982.
Countdown took a while to gain a loyal audience, but Whiteley and Carol Vorderman, the programme's resident statistician, eventually became a much loved double-act noted for their banter and friendly put-downs of each other, with Whiteley playing the dunce to Vorderman's genius.
