Carolina Rediviva is the main building of the Uppsala University Library in Uppsala, Sweden.
The name, literally "Carolina Revived", was given in remembrance of the old Academia Carolina building, which had functioned as university library for the larger part of the 17th century (see Uppsala University Library).
Carolina Rediviva is the oldest and largest university library building in the country.

In 1566, King Eric XIV donated the old chapter house, south of the Uppsala Cathedral, to be used for lectures.
The library remained in Gustavianum, which luckily escaped the flames in 1702, until Carolina Rediviva was completed in 1841.

The most widely recognized building of the university library is Carolina Rediviva, the "revived Carolina", thus named in reference to Academia Carolina (see illustration), which held the university library from the earliest times until 1691, when it was moved to the upper floor of Gustavianum, where it miraculously survived the great city fire of 1702.

It is unknown whether the other half of the book survived, and the wanderings of this Codex, the disappearance for a thousand years and possible fragmental remains remain a mystery.
In March 1995, parts of the Codex that were on public display in Carolina Rediviva were stolen.

But Gustavus Adolphus wished to create a more imposing identity for the University, which was to educate not only clergy but also officials to serve the burgeoning great power of Sweden.
In the centuries that followed the Gustavianum served many functions in teaching, and when the Academia Carolina was torn down in 1778, it became the main building of the University.

One copy of all Swedish prints is archived here.
In the library museum you can see the Silver Bible (in reality only the cover), writings by Carl von Linnéand music notes by Mozart and of course much more.
