Solanum genus part 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Noxious perennial herbs to shrubs, usually with creeping roots and prickles on the stems (may be sparse or lacking on robust horsenettle, silverleaf nightshade, and lanceleaf nightshade).
Horsenettle, silverleaf nightshade, and robust horsenettle can be troublesome in agricultural fields and pastures, especially those receiving summer irrigation.
Unlike the perennial horsenettles and nightshades, buffalobur and sticky nightshade have leaves that are deeply lobed from halfway to all the way to the midribs, with the lobes again toothed or lobed.

Horsenettle is a self-incompatible, perennial weed common to eastern North America.
Horsenettle displays an andromonoecious breeding system which means that an individual plant produces both male and hermaphroditic flowers.
As part of a longterm investigation into the evolution of andromonoecy in horsenettle, we investigated whether pollen limitation exists in two North Carolina piedmont populations of the species.

Steven, Peroni, and Rowell (1995) found evidence of pollen limitation in two Virginia horsenettle populations, and speculated that pollen limitation may serve as a selection pressure that favors male flower production in horsenettle.
Fruit set and percentage of male flowers were greater in the pollen addition treatment than the control for both populations.

Southern rust causes significant yield losses in North Carolina about 1 year in 5.  Late planted corn is especially vulnerable because of delayed maturity.  The fungicides propiconazole (Tilt), azoxystrobin (Quadris), and pyraclostrobin (Headline) are labeled for application on corn for this disease.
In North Carolina, the disease is most severe in the mountains and western piedmont, but it has become common in the coastal plain and tidewater in recent years.
Much of the loss due to these two diseases in North Carolina is confined to the piedmont section of the state, although losses in the coastal plain and mountain areas have been reported.
