7° Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente
She was able to achieve most of her personal work as from 1972, thanks to the support of the National Film Board of Canada, a public organization famous for its experimental work in animated and documentary films, and for the freedom it gives to artists from all around the world that work there.
Leaf's films are atypical in animated cinema, not only because they usually leave humour aside and because its topics are unmistakably adult, but above all, because of the emotional density that they are able to achieve with purely visual resources and with a language that avoids the conventions of classicism.
The isolation atmosphere that surrounds the two sisters from the title, the desire of one to protect the other, the secret that unites them and the outrage of that status quo that entails the unexpected arrival of a man, are achieved with a masterly combination of design, technique, narrative economy and staging.

Moved By Animation - Animation: Genre and Authorship by Paul Wells (London: Wallflower, 2002)
Wells convincingly argues that several 'live action' films are distinguished far more by the creative presence of this marginal 'special effects specialist' than by the cinematographic efforts of their 'proper' directors.
In an interesting and very instructive final twist, the avant-garde art of Caroline Leaf can easily be made to conform to the terms of traditional notions of authorship, since it depends upon an intimate, tactile, one-to-one relationship between artist and object.
Brief interviews with Harryhausen and Leaf, however, may prove illuminating enough for those of us already engaged with the field, but ultimately leave this reader with the feeling of having witnessed two missed-opportunities.
