  Lady Caroline Lennox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lady Caroline Lennox (1723-1774) was the eldest of the four Lennox sisters, immortalised in Stella Tillyard's book, Aristocrats, and the television series based on it.
The Lennox sisters were daughters of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond, a legitimate descendant of an illegitimate son of King Charles II of England.
When both of the girls' parents died within a year of one another, Caroline was passed over for the care of her two youngest sisters, Sarah and Cecilia, and this slight was the starting-point for a quarrel between Caroline and Emily.

 Notherby's :: Aristocrats
The five sisters, Caroline, Emily, Louisa, Sarah and Cecilia, were the great-granddaughters of Charles II with his mistress, Louise de Keroualle, the Duchess of Portsmouth.
When their eldest daughter Caroline, an intelligent woman with a thirst for sophisticated pleasures, eloped with Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland, the Duke and Duchess were mortified at her insubordination - marrying a politician against the wishes of her father brought swift judgement upon Caroline, and she was banished from her family.
Caroline missed her family greatly and grieved over their estrangement, but from her home, Holland House (the same one on the Holland House liquor labels), she kept discreet correspondence with her sisters.

Caroline had heard that there were other quarters at the club where many of the young men of the day gathered to gamble and she assumed, correctly so, that such was the case now.

 Charles_Lennox,_3rd_Duke_of_Richmond
Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox (1733 - December 1806), was one of the most remarkable men of the 18th century, being chiefly famous for his advanced views on the question of parliamentary reform.
He was appointed British ambassador extraordinary in Paris in 1765, and in the following year he became a secretary of state in the Rockingham administration, resigning office on the accession to power of the Earl of Chatham.
He now developed strongly Tory opinions, and his alleged desertion of the cause of reform led to a violent attack on him by Lauderdale in 1792, which nearly led to a duel between the two noblemen.

Being Tony Kushner's Caroline (Tonya Pinkins), she is neither your traditional heroine or obsequious Southern "mammy" but a gruff, close-minded maid in Kushner's own native Lake Charles, Louisiana during the civil rights days of the early 1960s.
This is Caroline's story, her dissatisfaction with life coupled with her resistance to and discomfort with change and her very timid first step towards accepting it.
Caroline, or Change represents the more cerebral new musical theater though it too has a warm and nostalgic Member of the Wedding flavor.
