In the densely-settled Carolinian zone of Southern Ontario, the tenets of reconciliation ecology would seem to be particularly relevant.
In the Carolinian zone, where large patches of habitat are scarce, matrix management offers an attractive supplement to traditional reserve conservation.
The insights provided by reconciliation ecology and matrix management suggest that conservation in the Carolinian zone may be aided by creating suitable habitat within the settled rural areas of the region.

Although this Carolinian zone comprises less than a quarter of one percent of Canada's land area, it is home to more types of flora and fauna than anywhere else in the country.
Carolinian Canada is a cooperative project set up in 1984 by the Province of Ontario and non-profit conservation groups to preserve the ecological diversity of this zone.

The Carolinian term has been applied because some of the species that inhabit the forest range from southern Ontario to South Carolina in the United States.
The Carolinian life zone is rapidly losing its ground and the need to conserve small remnants should not be underestimated.
The final outcome permits 10.3 acres of the forest to be zoned as open space with eight additional acres serving as a natural corridor between the forest and Lake Gibson.

The prevalent term for such a zone in modern scientific literature is biome, which recognizes that these zones differ from one another not only in the dominant vegetation of undisturbed habitats, but also with respect to all groups of plants, animals and microorganisms.
In Ontario, however, the southernmost zone in the province is usually referred to as "Carolinian Life Zone" or "Carolinian Forest".

Comprising the northernmost edge of the deciduous forest region in eastern North America, the Carolinian zone is the region of Ontario roughly south of an imaginary line between Grand Bend and Toronto.
Carolinian forests used to cover well over 80 per cent of the region and now occupy only 11, with deep woods only half a per cent of the landscape.
Environment Canada is also active in the recovery of endangered species in the Carolinian region—both as a member of multi-stakeholder recovery teams and through funding support—and is currently involved in efforts to restore and protect the king rail, prothonotary warbler, hooded warbler and Acadian flycatcher.

“Carolinian” is a name coined by early botanists, who observed that hardwood forests in southwestern Ontario share many characteristics with forests as far south as the Carolinas.
Throughout the Carolinian Zone, agricultural and residential pressures have caused extensive wildlife habitat destruction.
In Canada, the largest amount of forest cover within the Carolinian Zone is found in Norfolk and Elgin counties, which are 25 and 16 per cent forested, respectively.

 Naturalizing with Native Carolinian Plants
Despite some similarities to the mixed wood forest to its north, the Carolinian zone is distinguished by native species and natural communities that are found much further south.
As a transition zone between major ecological regions, the Canadian Carolinian zone also contains some northern species at the southern limits of the ranges and western prairie species at the eastern limit of their ranges.

Even though Carolinian Canada is quite small compared with other Canadian vegetation zones, making up only 1% of Canada's total land area, it boasts a greater number of both flora and fauna species than any other ecosystem in Canada.
As well several mammals such as the Badger, the Gray fox, and the Virginia Opossum are primarily restricted to the Carolinian forest.
Over 125 species in Carolinian Canada are considered vulnerable, species of special concern, threatened or endangered by either the federal or provincial government.

The life zones are the Alleghenian and the Carolinian zones.
Both the upper and middle sections of the watershed fall in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region (Alleghenian Zone), a transition zone between the boreal forests to the north, and the deciduous forests to the south [1].
The southern portion of the watershed is in the Carolinian Zone, an area capable of supporting species normally found in more southerly areas [1].
