Carolyn Mark and the New Best Friends: The Pros and Cons of Collaboration - PopMatters Music Review
Mark has proved herself to be a sharp-tongued, tough, funny songwriter, able to stand comfortably on her own wiseacre merits.
Mark's songs are three parts alcohol and two parts bon mot, a traditional style that owes multitudes to Nashville's past and seems to flaunt a middle finger towards the contemporary incarnations of Music Row.
As a songwriter, Mark is most effective when she reads a tipsy riot act; you can almost see her eyes rolling with a no-nonsense, endearingly cynical attitude.

 Ink 19 :: Carolyn Mark
As her sophomore effort Terrible Hostess avers, Carolyn Mark is one of the most talented musicians to emerge from this scene.
Mark is backed by a band who doesn't just play along with her singing, but instead the Roommates (Tolan McNeil and Garth Johnson) bring greater depth to each song by anticipating and understanding each bend and even the most subtle intonation of her voice.
Despite claiming to be a terrible hostess, Mark has not shed the "Party Girl" persona of her debut album.

I recently had the chance to talk to Carolyn over the phone during her short break from touring, and, true to her lyrical odes to alcohol, I was no less sure of Mark's sobriety at the end of the interview than the opening words.
Either way, she was a delight to talk to, happily discussing the past, present and future of her life and music with the energy of a small child on speed.
Mark's personality also seemed uncannily similar to the tone of her music---once again confirming her as a songwriter that sings what she means and isn't about to let that change without one hell of a fight.

For me, Carolyn Mark and her Room-Mates (Tolan McNeil and Garth Johnson) were the big draw this evening; although Mark has been through Chicago before with fellow Corn Sister Neko Case, this was her first time in town with McNeil and Johnson.
Mark specializes in hummable country-folk-pop songs that just happen, more often than not, to be gut-bustingly funny, and her energetic performance won her a lot of fans.
Although she'd been fighting a throat ailment for days, had canceled her previous few appearances due to ill health, and had already performed once that evening (at the record release show for Bloodshot's anti-death penalty comp The Executioner's Last Song), Hogan was in good form, welcoming this final performance of her current tour.

Mark serves up ten country-infused tracks, which range from rousing to smoldering, and are both more polished and looser than those on her debut, Party Girl.
Many of the songs on the record reference the musician's life, and here Mark realizes the Catch-22 that no amount of hard work will get you where you want to be without luck, and no amount of luck will make up for not working hard.
Mark uses her voice (and the vocal harmonies of her Room-mates) to fantastic, evocative effect, both desperate and joyous.

Montreal Mirror : Music : Carolyn Mark
Following a few Hootenannies away from her home turf, Mark felt ready to lead a country, folk 'n' roll caravan across the country.
The Hootenanny aside, Mark has shunned routine throughout her music career, having worked with an array of Canadian and American rock and country musicians in studios nationwide, often on a whim and sometimes giving her guest players five seconds' notice.
Mark's pliable sound reflects a reliance on rock-oriented musicians because, relative to the States, and despite the spirit of its communities that persevere in each city, Canada is low on country music.

Carolyn Mark - Pandora Internet Radio
After the group's 1998 dissolution, Mark formed the Corn Sisters, a duo with fellow insurgent country diva Neko Case -- a Seattle live performance later constituted their 2000 debut, The Other Women.
Mark also mounted a solo career, backed by guitarist Tolan McNeil and drummer Garth Johnson (her real-life housemates, hence their professional moniker the Room-Mates), and after signing to the Mint label, she again hit the road -- her 2000 solo debut, Party Girl, assembled 11 songs cut across Canada, at least one from each province.
Mark's long-standing fascination with the classic Robert Altman film Nashville led to the 2002 release of an all-star tribute to the movie's soundtrack, with contributions from Case, Kelly Hogan, the New Pornographers' Carl Newman, and other stalwarts of the Canadian indie scene; her sophomore solo effort, the excellent Terrible Hostess, followed that summer.

Vancouver-based singer Carolyn Mark is from the old-time era of country music as defined on the sweeping "Overture," which moves from dirge-like arrangements to early honky-tonk to a traditional country lament.
The singer is especially stellar when she gets down to business on the melodic singer/songwriter pop polish oozing from "Not a Doll," which brings to mind a cross between Natalie Merchant and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
The momentum continues on the narrative "Vincent Gallo," a song Mark takes to the next level by describing what happened in a gorgeous alt-country arrangement.

Music - Carolyn Mark and Her Room-Mates   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
Carolyn Mark is one of those troubling examples of altcountry singers who seem completely devoted to the music, but only in an exaggerated, stereotype-laden fashion that undercuts the style's real charm.
Unfortunately, what subtlety there was in Altman's artistic high-wire act seems to have been lost on Mark and her pals, who treat the film as a y'allternative Rocky Horror Picture Show, slavishly recreating its songs so they can hoot and holler at the genre they profess to love.
Thus, the musicians are undone by their own push towards irreverence: When it comes to Altman's sneering send-up of country music, these modern-day twangsters are all giggles and snorts, yet sadly, the same is true of their take on the director's insights into humanity.
